My approach to helping is based on my client's perspective rather than my own. I contend that appreciating and respecting the client's experience for what it is, is essential to productive therapeutic growth. I view counseling as a highly personal and subjective experience, where developing an empathic, connected and trusting relationship is imperative; it is through the safety of this connection that clients can work toward positive change. While I have had extensive experience working with a wide variety of clients, my specializations include women's issues (including domestic violence and trauma), relationships, GLBTQI issues, pregnancy/infertitility issues, internet addiction and couples work.
I practice from The Relational Cultural Model, focusing on enhancement of personal growth, relationships and life experiences, and how they affect who we are. I incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral and Solution Focused techniques because of their utility in dealing with real-life, immediate issues and needs.
Aside from my private practice, I am also Adjunct Faculty at St. Mary's University, where I have been teaching graduate and doctoral level courses since 2002. I was also the Director of Counseling Services at The Diversity Center of San Antonio.
