You are a loving caregiver, dedicated to your child. But lately, you have found yourself amid an emotional tempest, questioning your abilities and feeling like a parenting failure. Your child’s behavior has become increasingly challenging. Tantrums erupt at the most unexpected times, drawing judgmental glances from strangers and leaving you feeling embarrassed and ashamed. You often wonder how such a tiny human could evoke such intense guilt and self-doubt within you.

I am trained in somatic and attachment-based therapies, CBT, DBT, gestalt, family systems, sex and mindfulness, and am a certified spiritual director.
Texas and Vermont teletherapy clients only. If you are feeling afraid, confused and isolated, you are not alone. How do we stay mentally resilient, manage fear and have hope? If you are an individual or in a relationship struggling with connection, satisfaction or cyclical unhealthy patterns, reach out. I see individuals and couples who are willing to look at themselves and practice new ways of being in their mind and body. Together we will find your way to a healthy and meaningful life. It has been a tough year with an overload of stressors.

My therapeutic approach draws from psychodynamic, person-centered, attachment-based, and feminist theories.
I work with adults and children. I consider my client’s cultural context and values, so that our work together is sensitive, relevant, and respectful of your individuality. My practice is also inclusive and affirming of queer-identified people. I am aware of the ways that one’s intersecting identities can shape their experiences, I am here to offer guidance, validation, and understanding. With children, I provide a space for kids to learn about their feelings, and how to process them. I draw from child-centered play therapy techniques and tailor my approach to honor your child's agency, individual preferences, and interests.

I use neurobiological and attachment-based relational theories in my practice and train in modern psychoanalytic interventions to help people notice and then integrate their thoughts, feelings/emotions, and body sensations.
If you feel like you are expected to “do it all” and carry more responsibilities than others in your life, and feel like you need a break, I may be able to help. Some people find that their personal relationships, either with friends, family, or co-workers, seem shallow, one-dimensional, or unequal. If you would like to improve your relationship with yourself and others, this may be something we can work on together. People may find themselves noticing that they keep engaging in relationships that wound them and wonder “is there something wrong with me?” We can answer that question together.

I use a trauma informed and attachment-based approach, and I am trained in CBT, EMDR, and play therapy.
A therapeutic alliance is the only relationship that can be completely about you and judgment free. This gives you the opportunity and emotional space to uncover and work through unhelpful patterns that you have learned as a means of survival. The good news is that you no longer have to merely survive. Through our work together, we will create new patterns of coping that will help you thrive in all areas of your life.

I navigate from the belief that we all want to see and be seen well and to engage in complete freedom to be all that we are. As a therapist, my hope is that you will find that here. I practice psychotherapy through various modalities including psychodynamic, attachment-based, somatic attention, and trauma-informed theories. However, my foundational approach is Relational. I believe that if our wounds begin in relationship, they can only find healing within a restorative one.

I have enjoyed working in private practice for 30 years with adolescents and adults. Their issues generally include such things as depression, trauma, anxiety, and relationship conflict or disconnection from loved ones. Sometimes people have been struggling with these things for a very long time. Experience has shown me that using an Internal Family Systems/Attachment-based psychodynamic approach works best for most people, and can lead to deep and lasting transformation in people's lives. At other times I work with people on a more short-term basis, using a more eclectic, skill building approach to our work together.

I join with clients using an attachment-based, trauma-informed approach to hold space and help them move through feeling stuck.
Hi, I'm Sarah. Maybe you feel stuck right now. Maybe things feel hard and you're just not sure what to do. Maybe you've noticed unresolved feelings, or big feelings, coming back again and again. Maybe you feel stuck in a relationship, a season in your life, or your identity. Maybe it feels like things might always feel this way. Clients that I work with are curious about their experiences. Whether it's noticing past patterns, current feelings, or experimenting with doing something different, the clients that I see often want to understand more about themselves, to show up for themselves in ways they hope to be.

I work from a relational, attachment-based perspective, helping clients create change through the recognition and dismantling of behavioral patterns that may be holding them back from living authentically.
Realizing our own needs for acceptance and validation can be hard, especially when we have not been taught to ask for them ourselves. If you feel like you are bursting at the seams with new ideas but don't know where to start or are feeling pressured by new life transitions or impending crises, therapy may be a helpful place to lay your cards on the table and decide the next step.

We all begin the therapeutic journey with our own set of strengths and needs. Sometimes our uniqueness promotes creativity, new perspectives, and collaboration. Other times our uniqueness can be terminal; leading to emptiness, feeling disconnected from self and others, and beliefs that mental health treatment may work for other people, but it won’t work for you. Therapy is not about “getting over” events and issues; it’s about understanding your triggers and learning how to manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so that you can move forward and continue to build a fulfilling life.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
