I approach counseling from a systems and attachment-based, trauma informed approach.
My goal is to create an environment for my clients where change and healing can happen. Many of my clients come to me because nothing else has worked and they're ready to give up. Whether I am working with a a couple trying to stay married or considering divorce or an adolescent struggling with self harm, I believe clients can surpass coping, heal from trauma and thrive. And, I believe that challenging marriages can grow into healthy connected relationships.

I am a life transition therapist. I help adults overcome anxiety and the unknown in order to step into new seasons of life with confidence and hope. Transitions can be exhausting. A breakup, leaving your country or the place you used to live or work, losing your health, starting college or grad school are moments when your inner coping resources could fail. Mid life can be hard and confusing. When you lose a loved one, you may feel estranged, angry and traumatized too. Finding a safe space to heal and learn new coping strategies can make a difference. Working with me you will learn new tools to navigate into safe emotional shores.

Mental health is defined as the ability to love, and the ability to work; to be able to have stable and emotionally fulfilling relationships, to take care of your daily needs, and to be able to use your time creatively and productively. I offer person-centered counseling that focuses on helping clients understand their thoughts and feelings in order to change their behavior. I also specialize in Executive Function Coaching. Young people are often bright and capable, but overwhelmed by frustration, anxiety, or inattention. EFC teaches techniques to stay focused, plan ahead, get organized, make decisions, and follow through.

Do others look at you and think you “have it all together”? You appear successful on the outside (and you have so much to be proud of), but inside you feel anxious, critical of yourself, & overwhelmed. You’re constantly questioning yourself: Am I good enough? Did I do it right? Did I say that wrong? You may look back on your life and notice experiences from your past that have made it difficult to feel confident in everything you have to offer. It feels like you live in worst-case-scenario mode at all times, and while you want so badly to feel less stressed & more secure in yourself, you haven’t been able to change this on your own.

My clients are bright teens, brilliant young adults, and some of the most loving parents and passionate professionals I know In fact, many of my clients are therapists nurses, or other "helpers" themselves. Some people start therapy seeking relief from anxiety or depression, recovery from an eating disorder, healing from a past hurt, or guidance for a specific issue in the present. In our work together, you will build new skills that foster authenticity, connection and resilience so that you can let go of perfectionism, avoidance, and any other armor that's keeping you stuck in harmful patterns.

Were you abused, neglected, and traumatized? Were you raised by a tiger mom? Did you raise yourself and everyone else? Do you feel frozen, numb, and disconnected from your body? Do you feel like there's something wrong with you? Do you have a need to be perfect? Do you feel anxious even during downtime? Are you always running and doing and still feel it's not enough? Is food your only friend? Yet, on the outside, you look like the most put-together person. If only people knew what was on the inside.

I am here to help you embrace the best version of yourself. The world is full of stressors that ultimately can leave you feeling anxious, not good enough, or as if there’s not enough space for you. I build deep connections with my clients to feel safe enough to explore these difficult experiences. I help introspective people learn even more about themselves, resulting in greater self-acceptance and more overall life satisfaction.

Have you or your child experienced something terrifying? Or perhaps there's not one harrowing memory that stands out, but a lifetime of painful experiences. Other times, children, teens, and adults may struggle with anxiety or worries that they can't trace back to any particular event. My practice offers a haven when life feels out of control and provides support for adults and children to heal from anxiety and trauma. I see Houston-based clients in person and via telehealth, and am credentialed through PSYPACT to provide telehealth to clients in 20+ other states.

CaLm DoWn: Has anyone ever told you this before? I know, it really gets under my skin, too. Do I really need therapy? What's the point of sitting on a couch and talking with a stranger about my problems? I'm way too busy to be speaking with this guy for an hour anyway - - All of us have difficult moments in our lives that lead us to seek out therapy. Sadness can feel like it will never end. Anger is felt in our head, but we may feel judged by others for expressing it. If only there was a button we could press that would make us feel happiness. Though that magic button may not exist, we can work to create a new path together.

Are you standing in the face of uncertainty in your life or career and confused as to how to move forward? Does performance paralysis settle in when considering a risk? Having lived through Hurricane Katrina, resulting in an abrupt relocation to St. Louis in 2008 (after forty years in Louisiana), I can relate to life being out of balance, starting over, and the need for grounding. After fourteen years in St. Louis, I've recently chosen to relocate to Houston to be near family and have expanded my virtual practice to several states. Life is about transition, investing in a balanced life, so that we can draw from each area as needed.

There are many reasons people come to therapy. We all have an innate need to belong, be supported, and understood. I place a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and provide a safe space for clients to move forward. This emotional space for clients allows them to examine their personal experiences in a confidential and nurturing environment. While building a unique relationship clients can explore their personal feelings and emotions, habits, insecurities, beliefs and perceptions with curiosity rather than judgment and ultimately become the best version of themselves.

My clients often share that they feel heard, seen, and celebrated as individuals throughout therapy. I apply research-backed, trauma-informed, multi-culturally competent individual therapy to instill hope, self-compassion, and empowerment in young people. Through gentle guidance, developmentally appropriate psychoeducation, and empathic listening, my clients are able to tap into their inner strengths and vulnerabilities, and learn to tolerate discomforts and-- once and for all-- conquer their fears and insecurities.

Let's face it. You've tried therapy before. It wasn't for you, and truly people don't understand you anyway. What would happen if you tried it one more time? Maybe you're wondering what life would look like if you started learning coping skills and began healing. Life can be challenging, and you don't have to venture through it alone. We can navigate through this together. As your therapist, I commit to supporting you on this adventure and beyond!

Have you ever found yourself saying “I didn’t always use to be like this,” “I need to get back to my old self,” or “I’ve been dealing with a lot lately” and hoping for the insight or tools to change that? I work with adults and LGBTQIA identifying folks just like you: ones that have it within them to thrive again after life challenges, but just need the support to tap into their strengths to get there or support gathering and sorting pieces of life to make sense of everything. I help my clients find relief, empowerment, and happiness by equipping them with the tools they need to better understand themselves.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
