Those of us who were raised in chaotic, abusive, or neglectful families can experience lingering effects. Whether a parent had a mental illness, abused substances, or was otherwise unable to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment, developmental trauma (DT) can occur. Events that happen to us during formative years (particularly emotional abuse/neglect) affect attachment, brain development, and the ways we perceive the world. Although outwardly successful, we often struggle with codependency, negative self-views, and patterns of behavior learned in dysfunctional homes. This can leave us exhausted and feeling hopeless.
Many therapists treat symptoms (depression, anxiety, etc). I directly address trauma to get to the root of the problem. Clients learn to understand the impact trauma has had on them and how to make changes. I also treat religious trauma and aid with deconstruction. Please note- I only treat female clients and I do not treat BPD or substance abuse).
With humor and a direct style, I provide a safe, yet challenging environment in which to heal. Clients may come in with little hope, but often leave with an appreciation for themselves, an improved ability to manage their emotions, and better relationships with others. It is difficult work, but things CAN get better with an investment in yourself!
