This includes EMDR, trauma-based, and attachment-based modalities.
Healing is a journey. For some, "healing" means reversing years of trauma, and for others it means 'getting out of my own head' or 'getting un-stuck.' For everyone, the path to healing is a difficult one, and it is lighter, easier, more meaningful when others join in with you. To you who have tried to go it alone, I invite you to reach out. Connecting with a counselor is a way to get un-stuck in your journey towards health, to bring healing to those deeper places of hurt.

I specialize in working with individual, relational, and sexual issues from a sociocultural and attachment-based lens.
I believe that engaging in therapy is a radically courageous act. Exploring and sharing our stories can be terrifying, and doing so may go against the messages you internalized and survival strategies you adopted. Regardless of what brings you in, therapy can help you feel more fulfilled and more richly connected with yourself and others. I know that living in this time and culture can be confusing, painful, and isolating, and believe everyone deserves a space to make sense of it all, to be deeply seen and heard, and to be supported in cultivating a more meaningful and joyful life.

My foundation as a therapist is attachment-based and client-centered, which means that I will meet you where you are at and support you through mapping where you want to go.
We are all wired to seek connection, love, belonging, and to be understood. Our internal messaging often tells us we are not good enough to receive these things because of the dominant culture we are in. In therapy, we can work together toward the belief that you are enough. Here, LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies will find a safe and nonjudgmental space to explore who you are, realize your full potential, find meaning, and increase serenity and joy.

My approach is based in existentialist, somatic, and attachment-based theories.
Welcome. You’re here because something within you feels stuck. Maybe it feels like the pieces are in the air and have yet to land. You might be coping with painful emotions that don’t seem to resolve, no matter how much time you spend thinking your way through them. You might want the best for yourself and your close relationships, but struggle to unburden yourself from irritation, anxiety, or depression. I’ve been there too. I believe wholeheartedly that every person has their own path toward transformation and healing, and it is my role to help you walk that path and clear the branches and thorns from the way.

As a Professional Counselor Associate, with an attachment-based lens, I will provide an intentional setting to help heal, release, reconnect, and/or set boundaries with yourself and the people around you.
There are many different ways to heal, just as there are many different ways to grieve and process emotions. I believe that you do not need to have something “wrong” with you in order to seek help. Whether you have hit your personal rock bottom, or just a blip in the road, I will provide a safe and healing space to come along side you, and work collaboratively in order to find what feels authentic for you and your life. I care about my clients feeling acknowledged, comfortable and challenged when appropriate. Growth with a hefty side of warmth.

My approach to therapy is relational, collaborative, trauma-informed, and attachment-based.
We all can get stuck. Trauma, life stressors, uncomfortable emotions, and relationship concerns can throw us off balance. Do you feel constantly stressed, disconnected from your partner, or the impacts of trauma? The weight of these challenges can take a toll on your daily life and overall wellness. You may feel ready to process your trauma and find healing. Or, you may yearn for a closer connection and effective communication in your relationship. You may also desire the capacity to sift through your stressors and cope, calmness in your day-to-day, and fulfillment in life. This is where counseling can offer support and relief.

"David has been doing very effective, innovative and challenging deep attachment-based work since 1995 with children/families, couples, and adults of ALL ages.
From struggling to THRIVING. Become more fully "yourself." Enjoy relationship satisfaction. Strengthen connection to something bigger that is meaningful. Get relief from depression and anxiety (really!). Improve effectiveness at work. Feel more at home in your body, content. Mindful and present. LAUGH. Choosing a therapist that is both really good AND a great fit is important. There is a difference here you will experience from the get go. The office is in a 1930's Cape Cod style house...inviting & comfortable. With warmth and character. David is unusually relational and "real." Sessions are 60, 75 or 90 minutes rather than 50.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
