Popular wisdom suggests that adversity and trauma reveal our inner strength and build character. But sometimes we need help: someone to help us make meaning of those life experiences that changed our outlook, damaged our relationships, and left us questioning ourselves; someone to help us unlock our inner resilience and build new ways of coping. I specialize in treating adults adjusting to adversity, recovering from trauma, and dealing with life stressors.

Deciding to start therapy can be overwhelming, and at the same time, a really exciting moment. Once you make that choice, it is important to find a therapist that makes you feel heard and understood. My name is Mara, I am a licensed clinical social worker, and I have experience working with people who are navigating many different struggles and changes in their lives. My goal is to understand your story and work together to identify and repair patterns that have left you feeling stuck or unfulfilled. Psychotherapy is, most honestly, a very remarkable and often surprising kind of 'conversation.' The distinction being that when we have a 'conversation,' we only know where it will begin, but not where it will end. The 'getting there,' the movement toward 'the end,' is often a thought-provoking, pleasurable, funny, sad, profound experience that changes people in wholly positive ways. When therapist and patient develop a good working relationship, transformative things can happen. My work centers around creating a serious, useful, and private space to begin exploring the depths of what causes you to suffer, or feel misunderstood.

You deserve to be seen and heard for who exactly you are, even if you aren’t quite sure who that is yet. I’ll meet you where you are at, utilizing your own strengths, creativity, and interests to help cultivate change and healing. As a creative arts therapist, I can help you explore your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors with gentle curiosity. I am here to help you learn how to regulate, feel safe, grounded, and at home in your body. I combine verbal psychotherapy with creative arts therapies to help develop insight into the reasons that have brought you, your child, or your family to therapy.

Good therapy works. However, there are often barriers between you and "good therapy." It's hard to find a therapist that is a match, hard to look at your life with honesty, and hard to work on becoming better. I'm a Counseling Psychologist providing psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and couples. I've worked with a diverse range of clients with all sorts of presenting concerns. I've taught university classes on counseling and completed research on human behavior change. I know it's hard to find good therapy, but through all of my experiences, I've found one fact that remains consistently clear: good therapy works.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
