I use various effective therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Attachment-Based Therapy, Health at Every Size, and Trauma-Focused Treatment.
Do you feel lost and stuck in your life or relationships? Do you find it hard to move on from your past mistakes? Has depression and anxiety caused you to miss out on the life you want to live? Do you look in the mirror and not recognize the person looking back at you? Life can be very unpredictable, causing us to question our life decisions. Unfortunately, many people come to a point where they want to let go of the pain of their past but become lost in finding the motivation to take the first step. We will work through how significant events in your life have shaped how you see yourself and the world around you.

Sometimes we get to a place in our lives where we realize that we feel stuck. We want to take that next step in life, but feel like we just can't get there. We try different things, but nothing seems to work, at least, not the way we need it to. It also hurts to have a picture in our mind of what we want our lives to be, only to look around and see that we are far from having it. You might feel that you can relate to some of these experiences. You are not alone. Many people share these feelings. I'm interested in working with you, to help you have more of the life that you want.

Our journey through life can often bring about challenges which can impact our mental wellness. It is in these moments that we learn the most about ourselves, and identify potential learning experiences that can promote personal growth. My goal as your therapist is to embark on this journey with you, establish a healthy psychotherapeutic working relationship, and create a safe environment to assist with meeting your personal goals out of therapy. I have extensive experience treating trauma, depression, mood disorders, phase of life transitions and complications, grief, relationship difficulties, ADHD, and general mental health.

Have you ever experienced an event that completely changed your view of the world? Do you feel afraid, alone and unsure of where to turn? Are you experiencing intrusive thoughts, when you least expect it or even nightmares? Trauma has lasting physical and emotional effects that can leave you tired, jumpy, anxious, feeling ashamed, exposed, insecure and wondering who you can trust. Do you find yourself wondering why you haven't found the love you want in your relationships? Do you believe no matter what you say or do for your significant other, it's never the "right thing" or "good enough"?

You feel the pressure to be "on" all the time- with the kids, at work, in all of your relationships. You may even be everyone's go to person, always willing to lend a hand. On the inside, it feels like you are drowning from all of the stress. That might look like snapping and being more irritable with your kids or spouse, and then feeling guilty afterwards. Or, having a really hard time setting boundaries because you want to make everyone around you happy. One thing is for sure, you don't want to go on this way and are ready for some relief.

Hi - Margaret Doherty here! Transitions in our lives can bring up a lot of different emotions. Some of these emotions can be conflicting if the transition “should” be happy. My work focuses on individuals and couples as they navigate through these transitions. There are ways to process it, work through it and allow you to show up authentically for yourself and your relationships. Your emotions are valid and your reactions are safety mechanisms learned through your survival of your experiences. My goal is to help you navigate through these changes, learn about yourself and build a meaningful life.

Life is full of challenges! And while we work through and overcome many obstacles that come our way, there are times when we feel too overwhelmed to manage them on our own. Challenges can take many forms, whether as trauma, anxiety, depression, regular self-criticism, shame, processing a loss, or conflict with someone important in our lives. These forms of suffering deserve kindness, understanding, and support. The right guidance can help us move through and decrease these symptoms so we can feel greater contentment and connection.

Has your relationship lost that “spark” that it once had? Do you and your partner find yourselves in the same cycle of fighting over seemingly meaningless things? Do you find yourself constantly on edge over things your partner says or does? Does it feel like there isn’t any romance, intimacy, or sex anymore? Do you feel stuck and hopeless? It can feel like you’re with a different person or someone that you don’t even know anymore. The arguments seem to happen more frequently and feel more intense. This leads to resentment and anger, which only continues the argumentative cycle. Being in this place can feel hopeless and hurtful.

I believe therapeutic change and progress evolve through the combination of a non-judgmental, insight oriented approach and the development of a therapeutic relationship. With self understanding we gain insight into repetitive cycles that often contribute to sadness, anxiety, and relationship conflicts. In my work with clients I place emphasis on the strength of the intuitive, centered self. Throughout my training and postdoctoral work, I have had the privilege to gain experience in a variety of settings ranging from private practice, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, a residential treatment center, and outpatient clinics.

Are you struggling with an issue in your life? Feel alone and like there is no one to talk to? Are you afraid that if you speak to family and friends they will judge you? Whatever you are struggling with, you dont have to go through it alone. I utilize various client centered interventions with a strength-based approach. Through personal and professional experience I have discovered a passion for working with individuals to enhance self-awareness, build stronger relationships and improve the family experience. When one member of the family is suffering it impacts the entire family.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
