In my work as a clinical psychologist, I believe the connection between therapist and client to be the most important agent of change. Healing happens best in the context of a warm, collaborative and supportive relationship. When an individual is going through a difficult time or life experience, he or she often feels small, disconnected and incapable of making positive changes on his or her own. In safe connection, it becomes possible for the individual to feel empowered, connected and more flexible and capable of making the decisions and behavioral changes necessary to heal and/or move forward.
For 27 years, I have specialized in providing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with particular interests in treating trauma, substance abuse, autism spectrum disorder, and chronic suicidality which has enhanced my ability to work with people presenting with more common issues of depression, anxiety and interpersonal difficulties.
I believe it is important to help clients identify and articulate their life goals and to work towards achieving them together. I tend to be solution-focused rather than problem-focused. Specifically, I am intensively trained in and have been a national trainer in Dialectical Behavior Therapy(DBT).
