My ideal client is trying to understand not only the root causes that created a less than optimal life functioning emotionally, socially, occupationally, academically, or intrafamilially, but the actual cognitive behavioral steps to remedy the problem. I believe most problems we encounter in our everyday lives can be improved upon and transformed into a life we have chosen.

From outside appearances you seem fine, but inside you feel unsettled. You can’t quite name it, but your mood has been off, your relationships feel messy and unclear, and lately you feel lonely and disconnected. You have tried to shrug it off. It’s not that big of a deal anyway, this is just life, right? You push through this knot-like feeling in your stomach and insist your mind quiets down. You try to distract yourself- a good movie, work, go out with friends more. And you can try and listen to that mindfulness podcasts you’ve been meaning to get to. But you’re craving more than just venting to a friend who will blindly support

Beginning therapy, especially for the first time, can feel like an intimidating task. I understand that firsthand. The hardest step is acknowledging you need extra support and there is no shame in that, only strength. No matter what the presenting issue(s) is, we can work together to unpack it and focus on what brought you here, what you need out of therapy and what your ultimate goal is. I view the mind and body as one and in order to best care for ourselves, we need to nurture and understand both. Often times, our environment or situations happening in our life can derail this and that's where therapy can provide a consistency.

My approach is person centered, focused on creating a caring and empathetic therapeutic relationship, while utilizing varied interventions, including psychodynamic, behavioral and cognitive based techniques, family systems theories, and attachment based strategies. In addition to more traditional approaches, I am a strong proponent of creative expressive therapy. Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
