I enjoy helping individuals and couples utilize strengths as well as new skills to overcome personal challenges and relationship problems. I believe the relationships we have in our life can have a significant impact on our mental health and overall life satisfaction. Have relationships negatively affected your self-esteem, caused anxiety and depressed feelings, or opened your eyes to other concerns you would like to address? I can help you to find meaning in the difficulties you are facing, and learn to create satisfying relationships and outcomes that you want in your life.

What is it like to be growing up in such complicated times? It is no wonder that so many children are suffering from symptoms of anxiety, depression and other challenging behaviors and are in need additional support. Parents and caregivers find themselves in need of assistance to find helpful ways to respond. You are concerned about a child you love who is struggling, and have hope that things can change. I also provide psychotherapy to adults with a variety of mental health issues. There is no need to struggle alone. Let's go forward from here together.

Being human comes with complexities of great loss, love, curiosities and questions. We may reach a point in their experience where they feel like they are not living as their best and most authentic self. This can leave some feeling depressed, anxious, angry and fearful. As well as having ruminating thoughts, social withdrawal and being overwhelmed by it all. While working alongside a therapist, I believe that you can create a healthier and deeper understanding of the self, learn/practice communication skills, and process trauma to navigate and gain depth and perspective on the complexities of life.

I use an integration of Attachment-based theory, EMDR, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, DBT, and Schema-Focused Therapy.
As human beings, we find ourselves in "the comfortable and familiar," and sometimes those are not effective in our lives. I believe that regardless of our differences, environments, cultures and trauma histories, we all have the same core needs; safety, belonging, love, validation, attunement and healthy attachments. With attuning to clients and experiencing my own healing journey, I am in awe of the human experience people's resilience. You already know how to cope and survive. If you want transformation and transcendence, join me and let's get to the root of the suffering.

Counseling can be a vital experience for those with a sensitivity, depression, anxiety, or having stress, those wanting to adjust in some facet of life, or have complex problems to solve. If meaning and purpose, coping skills and practical solutions are sought, they will be found. The answers will deepen our life experience and quality of life. Common in our culture are isolation, loneliness, relationship issues, lack of meaning and purpose, depression and anxiety which can be successfully addressed with willingness and openness to examine them.

Do you ever feel irrelevant or disconnected from others you care about? Do you feel overwhelmed with too much to do, or not involved enough with things you enjoy doing? Do you ever feel isolated or empty? Do you stay in relationships too long or not long enough? Do you have difficulty asking for what you want or what you need? Do you ever feel like you are constantly getting more than you are getting? Do you want to make some changes but feel stuck? Some individuals and families need help handling scary situations. Psychological trauma is frequently misunderstood and can cause shame, guilt, and fear. I offer a space free of judgement in which to better understand behavior, trauma, family dynamics, attachment, pregnancy, birth, new parenthood, and sexuality. These issues effect family and relational functioning and can result in high-conflict family dynamics. If you have lost your sense of self or sense of family, I am here to help you chart a path back to yourself and each other.

I believe that each person holds within themselves everything they need to heal and grow in the ways they would like. I see the therapist's role as being one in which provides an environment of safety and care where the client can explore themselves authentically. It is through this authentic exploration, that the therapist can help the client discover how patterns and ways of being are keeping the client stuck and resulting in suffering. By bringing into awareness these aspects, the client and therapist can then work collaboratively to release the pain and explore new ways of being.

The human experience can be filled with joy but also suffering, this chapter of your life is causing turmoil but you are resilient. Bouts of depression, negative self talk, daily anxieties and struggling with low self esteem no longer serve you, allow yourself to work alongside a trained professional to guide you through the process of healing. Therapy can help you increase confidence, empower you to create boundaries and aid in your conscious understanding of the interconnectedness of your mind, body and spirit.

Establishing yourself, and your identity, is a lifelong process. You are not alone when you face questions including: Who am I? What is my purpose? Who do I want in my life? What do I stand for? Why am I here? When we consider these questions, along with countless others branching from these, you might find yourself overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or frustrated. Attempting to navigate this process, you may face societal expectations, dysfunctional family dynamics, economic challenges or other stressors operating against you. While desire to be stable, authentic, and true to self is shared, your story will always be unique.

My group practice specializes in the treatment of trauma spectrum disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative disorders, trauma-related pain, and trauma-related somatic symptoms. Ongoing experiences of verbal, physical, or sexual abuse, neglect, and bullying can lead to these symptoms. Sometimes people suffer these effects because they have experienced chronic invalidation. We treat couples, people in non-traditional partnerships, adolescents who struggle with emotional and behavioral problems. We also treat survivors of sexual violence and targets of workplace bullying.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
