2,500 years ago Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." He believed a good life requires an understanding of why we think, act, and feel as we do. Since relationship is part of psychotherapy, the personalities and philosophies of life of the client and therapist must be compatible. I am well-suited for clients who are curious about human behavior - their own as well as that of others. Before there were psychologists, the issues of life were addressed by philosophers. Thoroughly examining life includes considering ancient wisdom and spiritual reality as well as psychology (the science of mind and behavior).
My doctoral dissertation (accomplished in 1992, Boston University) and subsequent research and writing are on the topics of depression and suicide. I have 35,000 hours of clinical experience. My practice also includes individual and couples counseling, addiction, bereavement, and discussing issues of faith and philosophy (life's meaning).
A Professor of Psychology (Syracuse University) and Philosophy (LeMoyne College), 6 of my 21 books integrate psychology, philosophy, and theology: "Why Is Life So Difficult?," "It's Not Too Late! Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life," "Death," "The Human Predicament," "Buried Above Ground: Understanding Suicide," and "Relax, You're Normal" (amazon.com)

Groups
Suicide Loss and Bereavement
A "suicide survivor" is someone who has lost a loved one or friend to suicide. This type of bereavement is complicated by questions not associated with other losses by death. I conduct the groups personally, and have carried on research on suicide for over twenty years. Two books I have written on the subject are available through amazon.com under my name.
