Do you feel anxious, unable to calm down, sad, or misunderstood? I look forward to meeting you. I work with adults suffering from anxiety, depression, psychological and physical aftermaths of complex trauma. I help individuals who experience significant distress because of the hard relationships with their toxic parents or partner. In fact, the hidden wounds of childhood might provoke our excessive worries, intrusive unpleasant thoughts, mood problems, relational difficulties as well as physical pain. However, even if your intense emotions are rooted in genetics or trauma, that doesn't mean the problem can't be overcome.

Beginning psychotherapy can be a very hopeful but intimidating experience. You may be wondering: What will a therapist make of my story? How is therapy going to really help me feel better? or resolve my problems? My goal is to help you understand what your emotions really are and how they affect your mind, brain and body. We tend to over-focus on our thoughts and tune out emotional experience. What is really healing is to have awareness of both and understand how thoughts and emotions work together to help you feel better or worse depending how you handle them.

The most important aspect of successful therapy is a trusting relationship between client and therapist. To that end I strive to foster an environment that is safe, reliable, and non-judgmental in which no subject, thought, or emotion is barred from talking about. My approach is based in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which means in session, while we start in the present, we also explore how past experiences and unconscious processes may influence our current emotions and behaviors. I also incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness elements, depending on the specific needs and preferences of each client.

My focus is on healing the root cause of mental health struggles, prioritizing resolution over coping strategies and compensatory mechanisms. As a first step, I usually help my clients feel safe, understand how their life experiences affected them, and where their mental health struggles are coming from. In the following process, we may focus on fostering a secure connection (attachment) with oneself, discovering parts of the client's psyche that may be holding anxiety, pain, anger, or sadness, or other difficult emotions and guiding those parts towards intentional healing.

I work with folks experiencing anxiety and other challenges in relationships. Do you find yourself returning to familiar but detrimental ways of dealing with certain life challenges? Are you in a good relationship that’s triggering a lot of discomfort, making it hard to show up for your partner in ways that you like? If you have outgrown but still struggle with perfectionism, minimizing your needs, overachieving, trying to maintain control or isolating, If you want to feel less anxious, step out of the caretaker role, and have healthy relationships with yourself and others, I understand and can help you get there.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
