Whether you're transitioning to a new job, anxious about a relationship, navigating a recent loss, these adjustments can feel stressful and overwhelming. I have experience working with trauma, grief, life transitions, depression, anxiety, relational difficulties, and academic/occupational issues. I enjoy working with college/graduate students and young professionals. am trained in a range of modalities including CBT and DBT, but overall, I am person-centered, attachment based and psychodynamically oriented. Thus, I approach therapy from a trauma-focused lens, providing a safe space for clients to process all thoughts and feelings.

Not sure where to start? Searching for the "right" words? Concerned about talking to a 'complete stranger' about your anxiety/depression, relationship/work struggles, AD[H]D/ creativity blocks? Sure I "know" about people's struggles, individually & as couples -- and how to overcome these-- as well as different approaches to therapy. I have listened to & helped many folks over 35 years as a NYState Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Certified Adult Psychoanalyst. In addition, I have been an Adjunct Associate Professor (at NYU, Brooklyn College, & several NYC psychoanalytic institutes); I was in my own analysis; & I continue to supervise less experienced clinicians.

Relationship strain, communication issues, PTSD, anxiety, trauma, mistrust of happiness and feelings of depression are some of the experiences I help you heal from. I work with folks whose past pains are inhibiting present fulfillment within relationships and quality of life. We work together to navigate stressors and responsibilities they are expected to keep up with, while managing past pains to relearn safety on their current path. I treat the person as a whole- meaning in addition to your psyche, I also take into account your environmental, circumstantial, and physical self and how that impacts your mental health overall.

Are you struggling to feel like "yourself" again? Are you unable to feel settled, unable to keep up with your schedule or commitments? Are you feeling upset or more emotional for no apparent reason? Crises, be they large or small, disorient and leave us feeling uncertain, less able to rely upon and function like "ourselves." Growth and change are among the most positive and humanly adaptive qualities and yet the most uncertain and difficult experiences in life. At such times we want unbiased and reliable support to help restore our sense of self and help make positive choices for our lives.

My clients range from 20's through Geriatrics. ( Indiv/Couples/Fam) I see a variety of individuals in various situations. Ideally, my clients are seeking to unpack something that they are carrying that may be weighing them down. I like to be the passenger on your journey, and follow your lead while offering possible different ways of seeing a situation, and offering solution focused suggestions. I believe firmly in attachment theory and believe our earliest connections in life have a major impact on how we see life and relationships today. I believe in the ability to gain insight and strength to make positive changes in your life.

Emotional distress is too often pathologized when it's a reasonable response to the oppressive systems in which we live. Instead of trying to "fix" you or help you not feel any difficult emotions, I believe that all feelings have information, and we have the power to find out what that information is and choose what to do with it. I would aim to support you in strengthening your capacity to feel difficult feelings, to treat all parts of you with curiosity and compassion, and to determine what information your feelings are holding so that you can feel more connected to yourself and make choices that align with your values.

Whether you are having trouble managing stress, and/or experiencing grief, loss, difficult emotions, relationship issues, anxiety/panic, or you feel like you've lost yourself somewhere along the way, working with your mind AND body through integrated psychotherapy, can help.

I understand the struggles we all face. In my experience of over 30 years working in the mental health and human service fields with children, adults, couples, families and groups, I’ve developed great insight and understanding into what helps us heal. It is the relationship between the client and therapist that is of utmost importance. Most of us, grew up with unmet needs as children and/or have experienced loss and trauma and now struggle with expressing our emotions, trusting others, lack of confidence or motivation, poor self-esteem, relationship difficulty, issues w/ anger, self-doubt, poor decision making, saddness and worry.

When someone in a relationship is an addict, unhealthy role shifts and power imbalances take hold. Once the substance abuser enters recovery, things begin to re-balance, and this power redistribution has potential for new problems. Couples and family treatment can help both partners or family members to work together to adapt to the challenges posed during this transition back to a fully-functioning relationships. Providing a safe therapeutic environment, I assist in navigating the challenges that face partners or family members once the addict enters recovery, including how to best to assist the recovering person and address life changes for loved ones.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
