Do you struggle with challenging emotions or symptoms of trauma? With over 30 years experience working with children, teens and adults, my attachment based approach combines didactic and somatic approaches to best fit the needs of every client. Children need a safe and playful space to work through difficult issues. Expressive arts approaches and DBT methods are effective when words are not enough. My compassionate and down to earth process examines old patterns that no longer serve you as you discover new empowered parts of yourself. We work on concrete tools to address issues such as anxiety, depression, and symptoms of trauma.

As a bilingual, bicultural, Latina, clinical social worker, I have dedicated my practice to working with women, who like me, have been judged, misunderstood, silenced, and oftentimes overlooked. Who you are is not defined by your sex, color, dis-ease, relationship, or your family. Although these things impact you, the "whole" of you is still evolving; ever present and resilient. Don't let your past, your thoughts, society or your environment determine what works for you and what does not. Trust your gut - your body keeps score and knows how to guide you. We need to learn to listen to what comes from within. Let me show you how.

Everyone comes to The Work in their own way, for their own reasons, in their own time. For some, it's a safe space to explore and grow as they need. For others it's a dedicated ear and a mind trained to help them resolve emotional conflicts, stress, anxiety, and depression. Still others long to be seen and embraced (in all of their complexity and nuance). Whatever journey has led you here, my goal is to help you step into the fullness of your Self and live the best life possible.

We all have our place in this world and it can be a wonderful fit. Art therapy can motivate you to face challenges, express yourself, and work through unresolved feelings. We are social creatures of habits and attach ourselves to people, places and routines, as it helps to feel safe and grounded. Sometimes attachments are unhealthy and keeps us stuck. We may not be aware of how routines learned during childhood now affects us in being part of a family or community. Art-making helps to create healthy attachments and art therapy has all kinds of glues—some create strong bonds, some are temporary, and some sparkle.

Connection. It’s what we are all looking for. Connection with ourselves. Connection with others. But how do we achieve that in a world that constantly forces us to disconnect in order to survive? To numb out, to run from conflict, to judge, to avoid our vulnerability. Our vulnerability is what makes us beautiful. Let’s get back to that beauty. Whether you’re struggling with romantic relationships, work and family stress, or trying to cope with the multiple crises happening around the world, I’m here to support you. I’ve been a therapist for more than a decade and have helped hundreds of people just like you.

Making the decision to start therapy is one the best gifts you can give yourself. That might sound a bit cliché, but giving yourself permission to focus on your own needs and discover more about yourself can be an incredible process. This is especially true if perhaps you’ve gotten used to putting the needs of others first, by being a caregiver to a parent or family member who may be struggling with a physical or mental illness or substance misuse. Learning to put the focus back on yourself and figuring out what gives you happiness and fulfillment is one the many ways that a good therapeutic relationship can enrich your life.

Ever feel like you're on a treadmill and going nowhere fast? That no matter what you do or how hard you try you just can't get past life's challenges? There are many moments in life that will cause anxiety, stress, aggravation, sadness, and despair. No matter your age, sex, or profession these symptoms can throw the best of us into a tail spin. The bottom line is that we're human and these are natural occurrences. Talking them out with someone who is willing to listen is the beginning of regaining a sense of stability and wellness.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
