Imagine a space where you can be totally and completely yourself without fear of judgment. Healing is a creative and personal process which requires us to use many tools. Together, we can navigate the art studio to express conflicted emotions, practice mindfulness, reflect and create insight into your inner world. I provide an integrative approach to therapy that marries both art therapy and traditional psychotherapy. No experience using art materials is needed. Here we can traverse the challenges of daily life, promote positive change, increase self-esteem, destress and cultivate a creative outlet to process difficult experiences.

I view therapy as a laboratory for fostering meaningful change and self-discovery. I practice from an integrative perspective, focusing on creating a healing and empathetic relationship that incorporates a range of evidence-based modalities to move towards a more fulfilling, resilient, and harmonious life. I’m particularly drawn to working within the Internal Family Systems model, an attachment-based modality that uplifts the complexity and wisdom of our internal worlds and strengthens our inherent capacity to heal burdened parts of our systems and develop compassionate, strengths-based relationships with ourselves and others.

My approach includes culturally competent therapies tailored to each individual patient, drawing from Psychodynamic, Narrative, Existential, Dialectical-Behavioral, Cognitive-Behavioral, Attachment-Based, and Family Systems therapies.
I am a mental health counselor with a limited permit, working under the supervision of Dr. Sheila Chiffriller, a licensed psychologist. I provide psychotherapy to a diverse population of clients, specializing in survivors of trauma, borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, LGBTQIA+ issues, anger, family issues, couples' issues, bipolar disorder, chronic illness, grief and bereavement. My practice is rooted in principles of affirmation, intersectional justice, harm reduction, and embodiment and holds the position that social oppressions and systemic problems operate as barriers to wellness.

I understand the impact that culture, traditional values, and generational trauma can have on our day to day functioning and our ability to form healthy/secure relationships. I strive to work collaboratively with my clients to identify behavior patterns keeping them stuck, learn to set healthy boundaries with others, and challenge negative thinking patterns. Using a psychodynamic and attachment-based approach, I offer a judgement free space to sort through the complexities of your relationships and feelings.

“We bereaved are not alone. We belong to the largest company in all the world — the company of those who have known suffering.” — Helen Keller. Although grief is most often associated with emotions in response to a death, my clinical training and experience has made it evident to me that we can experience grief due to loss of a person, pet, ideals, culture, disappointment in life’s trajectory, a non death related end of a relationship, chronic illness, and so many more common but painful experiences in life. Grief, loss, emotional pain in relationships is ubiquitous with living and it by no means has to be linear.

I use a psychodynamic, attachment-based framework and balance careful listening with thoughtful probing.
As humans, we tend to avoid our more difficult and complex emotions in hopes that they will disappear. However, it is more often the case that the feelings we turn inward find their way out, and sometimes in a less-than-ideal way. Therapy is a unique space to explore the parts of you that tend to stay hidden. It is a space to “look beneath the hood” to understand more fully who you are and "why" you are. With this newfound insight, we can explore ways for you to engage more fully in your life and relationships, dig into your sense of purpose, and reconnect with (or discover for the first time) feelings of stillness and joy.

Advanced and specialized training in postpartum & paternal mental health and perinatal mood & anxiety disorders guide my emotionally focused and attachment-based approach to empower men on their transformative journey from Dude to Dad.
Modern men like you want to make it happen - successful marriage, fatherhood, career, etc. You need to get out of your head and speak freely, but you don't want to burden your relationships. Your partner isn't supposed to be your therapist, and if you're often feeling defensive, irritable, isolated, and overwhelmed, then it's better to get help now before things get a little bit too FUBAR. The therapeutic relationship needs to feel right, and you want a therapist who will listen to you, join you through the truth, challenge and support you, and tell you like it is when you need some honest feedback.

Ray DiStephan, LCSW. I have been working with teens and their families for the past 28 years. I have an in-depth understanding of public education and special education. I also work with adults and focus on building a personal rapport with every individual that I work with. Together we look for and find some strategies and a few answers. Generally, yes. But each individual is different, and his/her/their reason for being in counseling can greatly vary. Goals are an important piece, but only after some trust is established.

If you are an individual or family who is looking to get help with therapy services that meets your emotional needs, it is likely then I am the person that you can speak to about problems related to any cognitive challenges, you may be experiencing. What I do as a therapist, is provide services to families who are in need of therapy support. Some immediate issuses that families face are stress and anxiety. It is evident that many people who struggle with working through emotions alone, are often left feeling hopeless. The question sometimes is, what can I do to make my families feel better? which is what I always look forward to!

I offer individual and group therapy. My scope of practice has been focused around young adult men and women ages 20-35 and with Veterans of all ages. My main goal for treatment is to help you identify the way you have developed from core beliefs of yourself, others, and the world. We are all so much a part of our own norm that often, it is hard to identify unhelpful or maladaptive patterns and behaviors. I will help you identify whats sitting in your core and how we can focus on developing the positive; or restructuring the parts that no longer serve your journey.

Life presents us with challenges that can interfere with health and wholeness. We each have the ability to approach and integrate these challenges, yet it is easier with support. I work with individuals and couples of all ages seeking help with: life transitions, grief, anxiety, depression, personal identity, LGBTQ, relationship concerns, and alternative lifestyles, including consensual nonmonogamy. I also work with individuals navigating demanding and competitive high-profile careers in finance, law, healthcare, and the arts. Together we will nurture resiliency, empowerment, wholeness, and well-being.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
