Therapy can be a transformational process of self-discovery facilitated by deeper levels of awareness and change. I believe we have an inherent ability to heal ourselves, and my primary focus is to honor and trust your experience. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and other life stressors can interfere with living a fulfilling life, causing problems in your life and relationships, and leaving you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, lost or numb. I believe that therapy should meet the individual where they are within their unique set of circumstances.

My primary therapeutic focus is to help teenagers and adults to develop a stronger sense of self and to develop the coping skills they will need to address issues of anxiety, self esteem and self worth. I use a non-judgmental, trauma informed and holistic approach to help clients develop their ability to self soothe, including using body/movement and grounding techniques. I focus on both personal autonomy and understanding ourselves in relationships, with the goal of moving out of stuck feelings and thoughts to embody a more curious stance of your experiences and the world around you.

I believe we all share the need to be deeply understood, especially during difficult or challenging times. I appreciate the courage clients show when they share stories of their lives. Without fail, I find these stories layered, complex, unique and moving. I admire clients who dare to share life stories that are "works-in-progress" -- messy, drafty, tentative. Stories with icky parts (that's a technical term!)... or tender parts...or broken parts... or out-dated parts. Stories with gaps -- spaces -- where yet-to-be-written parts will go. .I believe this process leads to healing and transformation.

Do you ever feel as though the natural approach we take to overcoming stress or “symptoms” ends up with us spinning our wheels, trying to avoid thoughts or feelings? Maybe what we really need to practice is inviting them in and fully experiencing the present moment. I have dedicated my career to helping clients overcome what life throws at them. It can be rejuvenating to try something completely new, a complete 180 to the way we were taught to interact with our inner world

We don’t get to choose some things that happen to us as children, and we can grow up in environments that fall short of supporting the unique needs we might have had. If your story involves childhood abuse, neglect, abandonment, bullying, family problems or other trauma, and you find yourself still impacted by these things as an adult, please reach out. I would love to help you move past the things that happened to you so that you can make room for all the wonderful possibilities life holds for you. You may not have had a choice then, but you have a choice now.

Finding the right therapist is important and seeking help is a courageous step. You want a person with experience, who you can trust and feel comfortable with. You hope to be met with respect and genuineness as you resolve concerns such as sadness, stress, anxiety, relationship problems, or wanting to focus on self-improvement. I offer a therapeutic environment of respectful challenge, acceptance, curiosity, and joy. My approach to therapy is "integrative." This means that I utilize skills from several types of therapy to find the approach that is the best fit for your needs and your strengths.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
