Hi, I applaud you for taking this step. As a therapist, it's not just about addressing symptoms, but to hold space for all the human emotional experiences. I believe that trust and support are important foundations to our therapeutic relationship. As a second-generation Asian-American, I embrace a learning mindset that encompasses multicultural, intergenerational and intersectional contexts. I offer support in a range of concerns including depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, trauma and eating disorders.

I believe that healing of self lays the foundation for showing up authentically in relationships, doing fulfilling work, raising courageous and caring children, and building a more just and safer world for all. I believe that healing of self requires cultivating mind/body states that allow for joy, play, curiosity, and connection. I believe healing of self often means recognizing the ways in which we have been misled, harmed, and/or abused by larger social systems which were not designed for human thriving.

Have you tried therapy in the past or been in therapy and feel you've gone as far as you can? I have found this to be true for many people who are looking to go deeper, looking for more meaning and purpose and feel a desire to cultivate a relationship with their inner wisdom. Perhaps a different approach may help. I offer therapy which is a combination of traditional modalities such as CBT and trauma informed work and also, if you wish, the use of the tools of the ancient wisdom traditions to provide a deeper connection to self.

I opened Kaleidoscope Psychotherapy, LCSW, PLLC to empower my clients to better understand themselves as they navigate in their personal environment so they may make positive changes and create a meaningful, joyful life. Similar to a kaleidoscope which has many colorful shapes that make the entire image, you also hold many attributes that make you who you are. In our sessions, I will help you to illuminate these attributes within yourself, and reveal behavioral patterns, so we may focus on self-discovery, self-awareness, and positive behavioral changes that attend to your personal strengths and goals.

When someone in a relationship is an addict, unhealthy role shifts and power imbalances take hold. Once the substance abuser enters recovery, things begin to re-balance, and this power redistribution has potential for new problems. Couples and family treatment can help both partners or family members to work together to adapt to the challenges posed during this transition back to a fully-functioning relationships. Providing a safe therapeutic environment, I assist in navigating the challenges that face partners or family members once the addict enters recovery, including how to best to assist the recovering person and address life changes for loved ones.

What is holding you back? I work with young adults who don't know the answer to that question, who are struggling with life transitions, finding a purpose, and may be having a life "crisis." Often my clients are dealing with depression and anxiety related to difficulty making decisions, are stuck in an unsatisfying job, or are feeling confused and uncertain about the next step in their life. My goal is to help you understand what you want and what's holding you back.

Hello, my name is Dr. Brian Kelly (Ph.D.). I am a Licensed Psychologist in New York and Rhode Island. The most prominent component that comes to mind is rapport and therapeutic bond. If one cannot identify with their clinician, it can be quite difficult to open up and trust. Being vulnerable with your suffering and shortcomings is a difficult task but one worth undertaking. My focus is on assisting each individual with feeling accepted and supported while working to create change.

Many people struggle with finding balance in our rapidly changing world. My focus is on helping people make the changes they want to see in their lives, starting from the inside and working outward into relationships, work, and life as a whole. I work from a trauma-informed consciousness, with an interest in neuroscience, supported by awareness of the effects of toxic stress on the body, mind, and emotions. I work to help people develop a relationship with core self that supports finding balance amidst career discernments, relationship shifts, and changes in life direction.

My goal is to help you reconnect with your heart and not be afraid of your feelings. Many of us have developed ways of denying, repressing, or avoiding painful feelings, rather than learning to embrace them. In a trusting relationship such as therapy, one can learn to experience feelings more without so much fear, leading to deeper self and other relationships.

I believe we all want to feel safe, to feel genuinely seen, to have meaningful connection, to be able to weather challenges, and to feel, deep down, that we are good enough and not alone. When we better understand our inner patterns and all our parts feel welcome and seen, then we can tap into the natural ability of our brains and bodies to learn and transform. Beneath our protective defenses and habits, I believe every one of us is curious, courageous, loving, and worthy of love. As flowers turn toward the sun, humans are evolved for resilience. I work closely with clients to rediscover their natural inner resources for healing.

One thing that we all share as humanity is that we all experience emotional discomfort or pain, it is simply unavoidable. However, we can learn how to identify, tolerate, and manage uncomfortable emotions to help us better navigate challenging times. Whether you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, panic, depression, relationship problems, adjusting to a new life transition, or are simply on a journey towards learning more about yourself, my main goals are to promote healing by showing up as my authentic self and to create a nonjudgemental space that promotes self-compassion.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
