These are especially difficult times. We live in a world of uncertainty. In this world, we want to orient toward well-being. This dynamic requires constant adjustments. We want to recognize what is wholesome and keep it around. We also want to recognize what is unwholesome and not invite it around. Part of our work will be to develop our ability to hold difficult feelings and experiences without being swept out to sea. We want to learn to hold them with a little more kindness and care. You will often hear me refer to the "holding environment" which is physiological - body/breath, and attitudinal - heart/mind.

My biggest takeaway throughout my clinical career is understanding the perplexity of mental health and how all too often, people can be misunderstood when we don’t take the time to listen. I am a strong believer in meeting the client where they are and not forcing the therapeutic process. My engagement skills revolve around maintaining flexibility and no judgement with whomever is in the room with me. It is vital to understand that our challenges don’t define us and we must value every person as an individual, not by their diagnosis, disability or trauma history.

People decide to begin therapy for a variety of reasons. Many have had painful or traumatic experiences that they are unable to move past. Some feel stuck in unhelpful thought patterns or behaviors, or struggle to find fulfillment in relationships or at work. Others may feel burdened with excessive worry, or with feelings of low self worth and inadequacy. I believe that recovery involves healing of the mind and body, and I am trained in several modalities, including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), eating disorder treatment, and suicide prevention.

As a Mind/Body oriented Therapist, I understand that our emotions, behaviors, and physical body are sensitive to the stressors we face; we can literally FEEL anxiety, depression, and strong emotions. These stressors can affect our whole selves, often manifesting in negative thinking patterns and/or physical sensations of stress. Whether you are having trouble managing stress, and/or experiencing grief, loss, difficult emotions, relationship issues, anxiety/panic, or you feel like you've lost yourself somewhere along the way, working with your mind AND body through integrated psychotherapy, can help.

Even when we have received the ideal nurturing, secure, validating childhood, which can help us to negotiate complexities and challenges we may face later in life, our inner resources can become depleted. The capacity to find joy and comfort may elude us. Rebalancing areas of outer life, and planning steps toward change may be in order. I make time to learn about the myriad ways that using art, energetic, somatic and stress reducing therapies can help each person who comes in, to restore their inner lives as well.

Are you asking yourself if you should "talk" to someone? Maybe your sister or your best friend isn't returning your calls as quickly anymore. Do you tend to briefly ask how they are doing before you delve into your "stuff?" Maybe you are at a crossroads and need help deciding about your relationships, marriage, children, a career. It may be that you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression and/or you are witnessing your spouse or child suffer without the coping skills needed in today's world. Together we can formulate your goals, steps towards them and navigate the obstacles along the way.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Maybe you have struggled with making sense of your childhood and you have reached a point in your life where you need help moving forward. I’m here to support you. My approach is collaborative and non-judgmental. I want you to feel you can share what feels impossible, and perhaps what has weighed you down for so long time. I work with adults who have experienced childhood abuse and trauma and are ready to reach out for support.

Sometimes we get stuck and can't move forward because of the way we feel about ourselves. We may beat ourselves up for mistakes we made in the past and when we think about the future we are filled with fear and doomsday scenarios. Therapy can help you identify your distorted thinking patterns and free you from feeling trapped. Sometimes we get stuck in comparing ourselves to others and this leaves us feeling like we are "less than." or somehow "fatally flawed." Therapy can help you develop self-compassion leaving you more peaceful inside and accepting of yourself leading to increased moments of joy.

My focus is on assessing the entire person holistically. I want to acknowledge you for taking this brave and difficult step. Getting to this place has not been easy, but I assure you, you will get through this. Most importantly, you should not feel ashamed for seeking help. We are all imperfect, flawed in our own way. Only we control our journey to realizing our own best self. We need to listen and hear our higher self, clearing the noise and emotional interference that keeps us from achieving mental and spiritual peace. As a therapist, my purpose is to mirror, mentor and persist in helping you transform your soul.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
