With post graduate training in marriage and family therapy, I have spent the past 20 years working in the mental health and substance abuse fields. I find it particularly rewarding to help adolescent and teenage girls who often struggle with anxiety, self-esteem, school, and peer issues. My training and experience have prepared me to work with individuals, couples and families throughout the lifespan. Due to my background in marriage and family therapy, even when working with individuals, I find it helpful to gather information about family history to utilize in therapy.

Is work or school stressing you out? Are you tired of feeling on edge and not being happy? Are you having a hard time with friends/bullies or the changes in your life? If this is you, It is time for you to take care of yourself and address what is holding you back from a fulfilling and happier life. We often wear many hats and don't regularly take the time to address our needs. This often leads to being stressed, depressed, and anxious. We all struggle at times; emotional and psychological anguish are part of the human condition. And yet these challenges can be reframed as an indication that change may be helpful. I am a strong believer in the profound gift that mental health support can confer and that seeking therapeutic support is an act of self-empowerment and strength. I have a private practice in Princeton, NJ where I specialize in the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders, LGBTQIA+ issues, parenting concerns, family systems and eating disorders. In my private practice I work with preadolescents, adolescents, adults, couples and families.

I specialize in helping patients that are dealing with anxiety, depression, and trauma related issues. Worry, fear and bad memories often interfere with a person’s daily life. These problems can be very stressful and can affect a person’s social relationships, work performance, and self esteem. These individuals often turn to maladaptive coping strategies such as drugs and/or alcohol to find relief. I work with these patients to help them manage life difficulties and heal from past trauma in order to learn new ways of thinking and coping.

How has pain colored your lens? Clouded your thoughts and decision making? Impacted your interpersonal relationships? Work/School life? Most people don't realize that if pain goes unattended; it impacts every area of our lives; including how we see and experience the world and the people in it. Unattended to pain opens the door to destructive behavior patterns and declining motivation. Pain can show up in addictions, somatic/psychotic manifestation, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, etc. When explored with the aide of a professional, that same pain can be utilized to help you discover the best version of yourself.

Are you suffering from a loss -- or losses -- in your life? Have you lost a loved one? A relationship? Are you anticipating a loss? Loss and grief can be so painful, both emotionally and physically. What was, no longer is. The people and things you believed you could count on may no longer be available. Loss and grief can feel disorienting, like the ground under you has crumbled or shifted and you no longer know what’s up or down. You might feel stuck. You might feel like nothing will be good again. Loss and grief can bring up all kinds of feelings and reactions. They’re all valid.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
