I primarily utilize psychodynamic and attachment-based techniques and incorporate other modalities to develop a unique plan of action tailored to your specific needs.
My approach to therapy is collaborative and warm. I believe therapy works when we establish a meaningful relationship that allows you to feel safe enough to develop a sense of curiosity about your inner world. Within this space, we can challenge long-held self-narratives and discover the roots of dissatisfying relational patterns. My goal is to help you see the world differently and build agency to make changes in your life. Together we will identify new ways of relating to yourself and others, leading to a greater sense of meaning and fulfillment.

I use an attachment-based/relational approach to help build capacity for internal reflection so we can uncover and work through psychological processes that are operating under the surface and contributing to the symptoms and issues that are causing you distress.
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of direct clinical experience. I specialize in working with culturally diverse young adults (aprx age 18-35) who are having difficulty regulating themselves and experiencing some level of emotional and/or behavioral distress, which sometimes leads to significant problems in school, at work, and/or in relationships with oneself and others. Often, this distress can be eased with increased self-awareness that supports your ability to regulate your internal experience so your emotions feel manageable, your thoughts are more comforting, and you have more control over your behavior.

My approach is rooted in trauma-informed, attachment-based and anti-oppression frameworks.
My goal as a clinician is to create a safe space where we can work through issues that may be causing you distress, and eventually celebrate your positive growth. I may be a particularly good fit for those seeking support around interpersonal relationships, life transitions, trauma, anxiety or depression. Together, we will explore the patterns in your life that are no longer serving you. I am also a certified perinatal mental health provider and have a special interest in working with folks navigating challenges around parenthood including postpartum depression/anxiety, birth trauma, pregnancy loss and infertility.

I use an integration of Attachment-based theory, EMDR, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, DBT, and Schema-Focused Therapy.
As human beings, we find ourselves in "the comfortable and familiar," and sometimes those are not effective in our lives. I believe that regardless of our differences, environments, cultures and trauma histories, we all have the same core needs; safety, belonging, love, validation, attunement and healthy attachments. With attuning to clients and experiencing my own healing journey, I am in awe of the human experience people's resilience. You already know how to cope and survive. If you want transformation and transcendence, join me and let's get to the root of the suffering.

I incorporate psychodynamic, attachment-based, mindfulness-based, and humanistic theories in my practice.
Many of us spend a long time running away from the true essence of ourselves. We abandon ourselves to be accepted by others or praised by a society that wants a specific version of us. This ultimately leads us with pain that we find various ways to numb. Together, we can explore, feel, and heal this pain.

My name is Yaj (soft j). I am an Attachment-based Relationship Coach in Humboldt County, CA (former LMFT in NY for 17 years), working online and in my home office. Since 2001, my clients - couples & individuals - seek relief from chronic patterns of conflict and negativity in relationships. My work offers reparative relational experiences in 75-minute couple sessions (60 min for individuals), and skill training for life at home. When people show up willing to be open, even when it's hard, they discover a decrease in the suffering struggle and create safety and closeness in relationship.

Hello, my name is Dr. Brian Kelly (Ph.D.). I am a Licensed Psychologist in New York and Rhode Island. The most prominent component that comes to mind is rapport and therapeutic bond. If one cannot identify with their clinician, it can be quite difficult to open up and trust. Being vulnerable with your suffering and shortcomings is a difficult task but one worth undertaking. My focus is on assisting each individual with feeling accepted and supported while working to create change.

For me, being a therapist means being a collaborative partner with clients. My primary goal is to establish genuine relationships with others in order to undo aloneness and create safety. I aim to join people as they explore, navigate, and make meaning of the challenges and joys that they experience. Throughout this journey, I support them in discovering their most authentic selves by facilitating connection to their core emotions. I enjoy working with clients across the lifespan, and connect well with those who are feeling stuck in symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship/familial conflict, and identity formation.

I believe in our capacity to challenge and navigate away from unhealthy patterns. I support my clients in cultivating awareness and guide them in the healing process by drawing on innate strengths and resilience. I encourage clients to think of human beings as organisms, of body and of mind, that live in relationship with others and with our environment. As such, growth is our natural state. We are meant to grow, to act fluidly and adapt creatively throughout our lives and we suffer when that process is blocked or interrupted. However, our suffering can provide an opportunity to grow in new and exciting ways.

Hello! Thank you for your time and interest in my work! My name is Sam. I'm a first generation queer Asian American practicing as a licensed mental health counselor for 8 years. I could bore you with my educational and professional credentials, but I'd like to tell you more about me. Beyond the therapy room, I am someone who thinks deeply about my role in relationships and interpersonal dynamics. I'm also someone who dives into art projects and will likely have an unfinished project in a corner!

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
