I treat perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and have received advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, an attachment-based model for couples.
Life can be overwhelming. Finding a therapist shouldn't add to that stress. Each one of us deserves access to a safe, judgment-free space. As a therapist, I fiercely defend that space for my clients, and I hope to meet you there with warmth, authenticity, and humor. Having served the diverse population of this city in medical, educational, and non-profit settings, I am sensitive to the complex New York experience while acknowledging that your journey is unique. I offer a trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive approach for adults and young adults struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression.

EFT is an attachment-based therapy that emphasizes how problematic patterns in relationships impact security and trust.
Dr. Guz is a clinical psychologist with specialized training in anxiety, depression, mood, and trauma-related disorders. Dr. Guz provides an empathic and safe environment where patients can process their joys and their pains, while moving towards their goals. Dr. Guz believes that each person is inherently worthy, and that in the process of being seen and understood, people are able to build insight and recognize their strengths. In sessions, Dr. Guz will help patients build practical skills to manage stress and address the unhelpful patterns in thinking and behaving that underpin suffering.

I am a clinical psychologist and draw on over 15 years of combined professional experience in clinical and educational settings. I help adults and children whose lives are impacted by anxiety, depression, the effects of trauma, issues at home/school, as well as demands of adulthood: profession, romance, partnership, parenthood, and aging. Most importantly, I believe, effective work with a psychologist is a collaboration. I am a warm, active, and skillful partner. I bring my fullest attention to the person in front of me and the difficulties they face.

There are times in our lives when we come to feel uncomfortable in our own skin, maybe anxious or depressed, easily tired, or angry. These "symptoms" are there to tell us something isn't working right with us; they beckon us to turn inward, take heed of that small voice that unbidden calls to us. A voice that may have been there for years. It may whisper something like:" you could do better, be better, love better, accomplish more; hurt less." It challenges us to discover what keeps us from being thoroughly engaged in our lives, involved in our work, or deeply connected to our friends, our lovers, ourselves...

My goal is to create a deep and connected feeling to each person I work with; a sense of warmth, and safety in the room. Through this bond, I believe an immense amount of growth, insight, and desired change can flourish. Navigating life’s challenges can feel exhausting and unclear, so I am here to help alleviate this burden and work towards an improved relationship with yourself and those around you. I believe in the special and resilient ability we all have to tap into our desired best selves and I am always inspired to be a part of the journey.

Anxieties, insecurity, depression, difficult patterns in relationships or work, and problems focusing can be understood and changed, so you have more energy and confidence to devote to living. Become more connected to yourself and others through a specialized process of exploration with a trained professional, and see a difference in your life. A therapist's expertise and experience are very important, but the key ingredient of effective therapy is a "good fit" between you and your therapist. If you'd like to see how it would be to work together, I would be pleased to hear from you.

I work with people navigating changes in their life, specifically around family planning and care (fertility, pregnancy, parenting), and want help managing stress, anxieties, depression, and fears related to these life changes. My work centers on the mental health of pregnant and postpartum people and their families. Psychologically, the perinatal period is a time of tremendous opportunity for growth, reflection, and repair. It can also bring unanticipated emotional experiences that can feel isolating and uncomfortable. My clients are looking for ways to move through pregnancy and parenthood with more confidence and ease.

Psychotherapy is to the mind what the immune system is to the body. It protects and strengthens. Our mental health is a measure of how strong the relationships in our lives are. Our sense of wellbeing is linked to our ability to create and sustain healthy connections with other people. When our needs for safety, trust or atunement haven't been met; where there was or is neglect, abuse, or other traumas, our nervous system's capacity to regulate feelings gets compromised. Disappointment, failure, loss, frustration, anger and sadness are unavoidable aspects of human existence. The past cannot be rewritten. But the way in which we choose to come to terms with the past - as either members of a familial unit, a couple, or an individual - will go a long way towards determining our happiness in the present. I bring a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental approach to my work that arises out of my deeply held conviction that the most important determinant of therapeutic success will be the therapeutic alliance between patient and therapist.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
