I have learned that the heart and success of therapy is a safe and trusting relationship /environment where people can grow. I work to provide this safety in a supportive and non judgmental environment which empowers and encourages this. My role is to be empathic and support/guide this growth as well as to give clients a greater understanding of themselves. I see us all as unique and gifted and value the varying depths and needs of people.

I enjoy working with young adults, couples, and families through an attachment-based lens.
We are meant to share life's hardships with others, rather than be alone with our pain. So much suffering today stems from a sense of isolation and disconnection within our lives. I offer a therapeutic relationship based on unconditional acceptance and compassion; where you can feel support in creating healthier relationships, evaluate what you seek in life, and diminish pressures that hinder your growth and happiness. We live in a stressful, anxiety-provoking time. When we slow down and look at our own core values and how we would like to inhabit our lives, we give ourselves permission to make mistakes and grow.

My counseling draws from internal family systems, person-centered, and attachment-based therapies to create an approach that is both holistic and centered on the science of human development.
Wherever you are in your life, I’d love to get to know you and see what healing we can accomplish together. I am constantly amazed by the resourcefulness that clients have used to survive through the hardest parts of their lives. Oftentimes, making it through also means that we have developed parts of ourselves that are tough enough to cause us problems we can’t solve alone. I see my job as a therapist as being that other person who helps you create a safe and curious space to heal the frustrations between those parts that feel stuck and the parts that help you thrive.

Hi! I am currently seeing clients in person in Helena and providing telehealth across Western Montana. I am a relationship-oriented therapist striving to accept clients unconditionally wherever they are at in life. I believe (and research supports) therapy works best when client and therapist work together toward understanding the origins of dissatisfaction and finding freedom to truly be oneself. This process makes possible change that enhances the relationship with oneself and with others. I work with clients to develop greater openness to experience and greater capacity for the complexity of a richly lived life.

Life is full of uncertainties. Many of them can unexpectedly destabilize us, causing stress, despair, anxiety, and even depression. Such circumstances could prevent a mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy life, where hope for change is not visible. If you feel identified with this, I want to tell you that you are not alone. Seeking help is the first step in finding a way out and seeing the light among adverse/unexpected circumstances. Therapy helps you explore the causes, thoughts, emotions, and patterns that block and prevent you from moving forward. Together we can find the way out.

The decision to start therapy services is a courageous one, and thankfully one you do not have to navigate alone. My hope is to empower you to overcome the challenges and obstacles you may be facing to live the life you want most. The mind wants to heal, and I look forward to working together to develop tools and skills to achieve this healing.

In art therapy, we make things together to create a bridge to communication, sometimes staying in the metaphor, and other times using the art product as a jumping off point for verbal discussion. When using narrative therapy, we find new and creative ways to look at old, unproductive stories. We create goals together. I provide the solid, predictable framework and ongoing support, as well as parent coaching. We create opportunities for deep insight, meaningful growth and healthy risk-taking.

I work with couples, adults, kids, and families dealing with disruptive events, situations, and behaviors. Some of these situations are typical life transitions: entering adolescence, a new child in the family, school and work conflicts, or life-stage changes. Other transitions are more obviously traumatic: medical crises, chronic illness, infidelity, or the dissolution of long-term relationships. I work with patients that have long-term, debilitating mental illnesses, and patients that have more situational or transitional difficulties. I welcome clients who are struggling with parenting plan issues and post-divorce conflict.

Sometimes our life experiences have a way of causing an altered view of ourselves and the world around us. Trauma and grief can also cause us to disconnect from our lives and the people we love, leaving us feeling unsettled, anxious, and lost. My approach to counseling involves creating a safe space for my clients that supports self-exploration, understanding, and personal growth. My strength-based, trauma-informed practice draws primarily from cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness practices, and internal family systems. Together, we can define your goals and values, and explore who you truly are.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
