I love helping people address needs related to relationships, family, children, faith, and self-development. I am interested in the intricacies, challenges, and healing of relationships which involves honest appraisal and assessment of interpersonal communications which affect the most important aspects of personhood and human interactions. I enjoy the adventure of accompanying clients as they seek resolution of the challenges of living with ourselves and others in the world. The ultimate goal, in my current understanding, is to be at peace with who we are, who we have been, and continue striving to become the person we want to be.

Ever think: "How did I end up here?" or "I never imagined {life event} would happen to me!" You are not alone! We can all relate to these sentiments. Most people do not end up in therapy because circumstances are unicorns and rainbows. Are you struggling with loss, or making meaning out of events that have left you feeling uncertain, shaken, in agony? Do you feel like you are starring in a scene from the film Ground Hog Day, where life is a series of frustrating, repeating events? You can make a successful transition to break this cycle, whatever that personal change is. You will get a sense of control back. A little Zen. Some hope.

Life is full of uncertainties. Many of them can unexpectedly destabilize us, causing stress, despair, anxiety, and even depression. Such circumstances could prevent a mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy life, where hope for change is not visible. If you feel identified with this, I want to tell you that you are not alone. Seeking help is the first step in finding a way out and seeing the light among adverse/unexpected circumstances. Therapy helps you explore the causes, thoughts, emotions, and patterns that block and prevent you from moving forward. Together we can find the way out.

Life is difficult to navigate in the best of circumstances. We often carry with us a past that influences how we interact with others, our perception of the way others interact with us, and the patterns we form in our relationships. You do not have to navigate these waters alone. Therapy can help support your individual, family and relationship goals. I understand it takes courage to ask for help and I want to make the process easy for you.

In therapy I don't just help people walk through their struggles, I help them discover what those problems are, and where they came from. In the office, I use psychodynamic, existential, and relational approaches to understand both why folks want to change, and why they haven't been able to, fully honoring that reluctance in order to make therapy enduring and empowering, ages 3 through 93, for families, couples, and individuals.

As a therapist, my aim is to meet you where you are. I help by fostering a safe, non-judgmental environment, centered on exploring the unique issues and struggles which brought you to therapy. I will provide support and understanding within the therapeutic relationship for you to better understand yourself and the difficulties you are having. In this process you can learn to understand and manage the obstacles that have led to the struggles whether it be in your mood, behaviors, self-esteem, jobs, and/or relationships. I believe in the most difficult of times there is also an opportunity for change and growth.

I was trained in family therapy, and throughout my career have focused on couple's therapy as a specialization. In 2012, I began working with veterans and survivors of trauma using a combination of narrative and cognitive-behavioral therapies. I have continued to work with a variety of patients, as well as, having the freedom in my practice to continue specializing in couples and trauma survivors.

Perhaps you are a young person struggling to meet the expectations of those around you or to figure out who you are and where you fit in. Maybe you are a parent finding yourself slipping as you navigate the challenges of raising children with complex needs in addition to your own responsibilities. You might be falling into unhealthy habits, losing focus or in acute crisis. I specialize in issues related to depression, anxiety, identity, transitions, trauma, family systems and personality disorders.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
