In client-centered Music Therapy, the client informs the interaction. Music Therapy works to address what we want to change by combining speech, movement, and body based interventions. This method of treatment works to quickly address the reflexive parts of the brain (where our survival instincts and fight or flight responses live). As a therapist, I'm there to provide support, expertise, and guidance! This type of therapeutic interaction can be especially accessible if talking about an event or identifying something specific is challenging.

Sometimes life feels heavy. Trouble at work, problems in your relationships, the isolation of this day and age. Maybe you had a difficult childhood that you can't seem to break away from. It can all feel like too much sometimes, bringing up intense feelings of anxiety, anger, depression, loneliness, and grief. If any of this sounds familiar, I can definitely help. I work with adults and couples struggling with intense emotions. My clients often want to understand how their past experiences and traumas have impacted their current difficulties. They also want to learn how to create a more peaceful and enthusiastic life for themselves.

Wounds often shape our life's choices without our knowledge of their presence. Life is hard and these wounds can wear on us over time. Are you unsure if you're struggling with an addiction and you feel like your substance may be wreaking havoc on your life and your relationships? It takes courage to ask for help. I can meet you where you are and we can explore this together in an environment that is free of shame and judgement. Successful therapy involves a collaborative relationship where clients risk to uncover wounds and challenge unhelpful family structures.

Do you need a safe space to process what's on your heart and mind? Sometimes we can feel out of balance when we try to navigate our inner dialogue with complex emotions. We can feel weighed down and unsure of where to start, which can affect our relationship with ourselves and others. My goal is to provide a safe space where you can begin working through your story. I'll work with you from a place of authenticity, curiosity, and care. There is no judgement here; only a desire to meet you where you are today and help you get to where you want to go.

Feeling stuck, apathetic, overwhelmed, angry, worried, depressed, anxious, hopeless, or disconnected is exhausting and isolating. Many of our systems are designed to keep you this way, and you deserve more. I believe every person has an innate resilience, that helps us adapt to an ever changing world. I work to meet people where they are, connecting to the strength, courage, and insight already present and exploring areas for transformation and growth.

I am a specialist who works with adults and teens ages 14+ on intense anxiety, trauma and complex trauma, dissociation, and personality disorders. My clients come in saying they feel numb and irritable or outright angry at the world. Many wonder if they have ADHD or are on the spectrum. On their worst days, they feel like they are in constant fight or flight mode and teetering on collapse. They want to be able to authentically connect with others and to feel peace and contentment, but are not sure how. Most importantly, my clients want to solve their problems, stop repetitive patterns, and move on with with their lives.

I believe in the value of working through personal problems and issues in the context of stronger relationships. I will help you with this on a personal level, and in the process of restoring health and relationships with whomever you are intending to build this restored relationship with.

My name is Caleb Stephens, and I am an Intersectional Clinician. The reality of therapy is that it is inaccessible to most, and the majority of therapists gear their therapy around themselves, and not around the needs of the client, nor the layers of identity that exist. I am not a traditional therapist, as I am also an Activist, and the majority of the work that I do is Identity work. This is about meeting you where you're at, and I'm here for it.

Suffering, while valuable, doesn’t have to define you or your story. If you’re wanting to move beyond old hurts, or feeling stuck despite desiring change, together we can re-author your story to include healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and being. In addition to my office in Brookside, KCMO, I also offer sessions via Telehealth for those who are unable to leave home or feel it is a better fit.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
