I help you heal from the past, accept what is, and live life with intention. Relationship wounds can cause you to lose touch with parts of yourself. You can learn to reconnect with and heal those parts, become the source of your own self-love, self-acceptance, and self-worth. Through radical acceptance of self, others and the world, you can cultivate wisdom and compassion as an internal refuge. I can help you face what is painful and create intention for how you want to be in a world that is not always as you wish it to be. A sense of well-being and peace can be cultivated, even in the midst of chaos, loss and unwanted change.

Life can be challenging at all stages! In my work with late teens to adults, I have found a common denominator: they have all the potential within themselves to be who they want to be, but got lost along the way. I work with you to fight the urge to be perfect and do everything "right." Do you want to feel confident in your job? What direction to go in your sport? Decide if this relationship is right for you? Want to feel comfortable and confident in your body? Improve your relationship with food? Process trauma related to an eating disorder or relationship? If you're in one of these stages, we might be a good fit!

Shannon became a therapist to help people navigate their complex world, improve their mental health, and experience joy-filled lives. She utilizes clinically tested and evidence-based interventions and believes in a holistic approach to mental health and that all areas of one’s life are interconnected. Research shows that unhealthy relationships and traumatic events can cause emotional, relational, and physical stress. In contrast, healthy relationships, boundaries, and emotional healing in therapy can improve your overall well-being and life satisfaction.

I’m a licensed psychologist whose training and experience are in the area of Clinical Psychology. My work with individuals grows out of the perspective that people have innate abilities and unique experiences in life that combine to shape the ways in which they view themselves and others. I seek to help individuals understand the issues that may be preventing them from reaching life goals. I work with clients to help them create and maintain an understanding of themselves and the world around them. This kind of therapeutic work can result in a reduction of distress and an increase in positive interactions with others.

Your past doesn't define you; it informs you. Painful feelings and many of life's experiences can be difficult to work through alone. I work with individuals who want to examine their self-limiting thoughts, understand how to process/regulate their emotions and elevate their self-esteem, self-compassion and confidence. Others need someone who understands how to heal from relational abuse and parent wounds. Maybe it's relief from stress and anxiety that brought you here, or relationship distress. My intention is to support you with curiosity and compassion and help you heal the wounds that have kept you from knowing peace & thriving.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
