Have you ever thought, "How did I end up here?" Life has a way of giving us challenges we never could have imagined. Life's hard! You may feel you have been pushed past your breaking point, BUT there's good news... You're NOT broken, NOT worthless, and definitely NOT alone. What if I told you the strength to take control of this challenge is already inside you? You've found my profile, which says that you've already done something very brave. You've said, 'I have bigger plans for my life than this', and that is impressive.

The pressures of life can be overwhelming. Often we can move from okay to not okay very quickly when these pressures catch up - leaving us feeling fragile, on edge, and isolated. Maybe you've had a loss or big change that you can't quite recover from. Maybe it's just the constant movement of life that’s draining your emotional energy. You want to sort through all your thoughts and feelings but you find yourself pretending to be ok when you're not because it just seems easier. Then you hit a breaking point and just can't pretend anymore.

Life can be messy, and it is okay to not be okay; but you do not have to face life’s challenges alone. As a Licensed Master Social Worker, I believe counseling should be a supportive and compassionate collaboration in which clients are accepted where they are in the present and are valued as the experts of their experiences. Life doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and I will work closely with individuals to consider their relationship with their environments in order to explore areas of strength as well as areas for potential growth.

We thrive as humans when we understand ourselves. I work creatively and compassionately with children, adolescents and adults of all ages to deepen and broaden self-understanding. Emotional pain - like physical pain - is a signal that help is needed and that something must change. Psychotherapy can be that powerful catalyst for healing. I believe in meeting people where they are, listening intently, and co-creating a safe and brave space where my clients can grow.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
