I'm always honored to help adults and adolescents who are recovering and learning to thrive following acute and complex trauma. Traumatic stress reactions can take many forms including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, substance misuse, and difficulties in relationships. Through a careful assessment and individualized formulation, trauma-focused psychotherapy can help to address them all. I particularly enjoy working with those who have experienced or lost loved-ones through community gun violence and veterans with combat trauma or challenges reintegrating into civilian life.

When you seek therapy, it is usually because something doesn't feel right. The reasons for this are not always in your consciousness. The therapy process is a journey during which, through exploration, you can uncover issues that lie beneath the surface. You become a student of the self. I can guide you on this journey. By making connections between past and present and recognizing repeated patterns of behavior, you can begin to see the "big picture," and make decisions that can bring about the changes you hope to achieve.

Have you ever wondered if your past sexual experiences might be negatively affecting your current well being? My counseling practice centers around helping individuals and couples who have experienced sexual trauma and/or brokenness in any of its various forms. Whether it be due to past abuse, recent infidelity, or a history of sexual, physical and emotional betrayal and trauma, I consider it a privilege to walk with clients into the darkness of their stories. I enjoy coming alongside and advocating for those who are tired of just coping, dissatisfied with their quality of life, and desperate for deep change and healing.

I continue to be humbled by how life can take a completely different and unexpected turn within a few moments. Over ten years ago, I experienced a life altering loss that required me to lean on others and dive into deep self-reflection in order to heal. My hope and desire as a therapist is to provide the space and guidance that will allow you to grieve, process, challenge and change the way you engage with life. We may not be able to forget traumatic or difficult times or make certain stressors and tendencies disappear, but we can take steps and create habits that elevate us to our potential and find lasting and genuine fulfillment.

The choice to reach out for help is often one of the most difficult decisions. But it allows us to begin a new way of connecting that paves the way to change beyond what can be achieved through our regular, daily interactions. We all go through difficult situations in our lives when we feel stuck or are struggling to find our voice or identity. Counseling supplies an empathic and non-judgmental foundation for you to find whatever you're looking for.

Moms, it is time for you to heal! Very few moms take time for themselves to focus on their own needs and growth. Therapy allows you to unpack yourself. Together we will heal the wounds from the past to create change in current relationships with kids, your partner, friends, co-workers, etc. I work with unsatisfied women and moms who want to dive deeper into themselves. My clients have a safe place to be vulnerable to do the work. During our sessions, I will challenge you to get curious about yourself; by doing that, you will show up within your relationships more connected, authentic, and regulated.

A mainstay of my therapeutic philosophy is the importance of avoiding judgment, of ourselves and others. While this is not always easy, and it is very normal to feel embarrassed or potentially judged when you first begin working with a therapist; I encourage you to try to remember that judgment and self-judgment are actually a story and this telling can be rewritten.

You've always done everything right. And yet your world's just been turned upside down. Life no longer looks or feels like how you expected, whether due to a death (recent or anticipated), a diagnosis (your own or a loved one's), or relationship dissatisfaction. Waves of hard feelings keep coming at you, and your best efforts to deal with it aren't helping nearly enough. But because you're normally the one who has it all together, everyone thinks you're doing way better than you really are. You tell yourself everyone's doing their best to support you but – let’s face it – their best kinda sucks, and so you're left feeling all alone.

Sometimes when we struggle with something anxiety-related, it can be difficult to distinguish ourselves from our issues, so accustomed are we to the presence of distressing, time-consuming thoughts and feelings. We may even question whether there's value in committing to a separation from them. But who are we - and who can we become - when these unwelcome thoughts and feelings become less sticky? Obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and anxiety in all its forms limit our potential, detracting from what we really value. We sense we need to make a change in order to enjoy our future.

I often work with people to manage issues in their lives that have become difficult and distressing, such as separation/divorce, career/job changes, grief/loss, relocation, becoming a parent, and retirement. Some clients experience symptoms of anxiety or depression and we focus on realistic, practical strategies to reduce their intensity and impact. My approach involves closely assessing how these issues impact daily life, how relationships are affected, what support has or hasn't been available and then develop a plan for working toward changes and greater satisfaction in life.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Webster Groves?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
