My clinical work is attachment-based and trauma-informed, focusing on child and adolescent populations.
As a systemic therapist, I think of people kind of like nesting dolls: we all go through life as the little one in the middle, whole and independent, yet undeniably we are nestled in larger contextual structures. I will meet you with compassion, humor, and non-judgment in the therapy space, holding your whole picture in mind as we work together to integrate the realities of your context with the realities of your heart. All parts of you are welcomed and held. I am a queer-identifying provider and enjoy supporting clients in navigating their own identities.

Sessions with me tend to incorporate a mix of Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and attachment-based approaches.
Overall, I would say that I am just a human who enjoys helping other humans no matter who they are or what problems they are navigating in life. Some of the most prevalent diagnoses I have worked with include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. I am passionate about working with individuals who are part of the LGBTQIA2+ community or are questioning any part of their identity. I also have a passion for supporting individuals have experienced religious or spiritual trauma and helping them unpack and overcome the unique challenges it can cause.

My approach incorporates relational, psychodynamic, attachment-based and holistic lenses.
If you're reading this page, you are likely experiencing some emotional distress and/or dissatisfaction that you would like support to understand and resolve. Perhaps you can identify causes and perhaps it just feels confusing. Meeting with someone to gain understanding around where these experiences originate, as well as tools to address them, is a great (and brave) step. I would love to chat to see if we may be a good fit in that important work.

Hi there! I’m Nicole (they/them), a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW). I have a BA in psychology and a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from St. Catherine University. My therapeutic approach is relational, collaborative, and affirming. I also work from a trauma-informed, attachment-based, harm reductive, and sex-positive lens.

I specialize in working with adults who are looking for a space to learn about and feel compassion towards themselves. I became a therapist because of the inherent value I believe that being seen, known, and held by another can provide. I understand the significance of and deeply value the therapeutic relationship, which I believe is one of the most powerful tools for change. I use warmth, humility, humor, and empathy to approach my clients. I often work with adults coping with depression, anxiety, grief, the after-effects of trauma, perinatal and postpartum concerns, and familial and relationship issues.

"I am not crazy," is the first thing many hear when thinking of mental health. Mental health is less about being crazy and more about over all well-being. Research shows that expressing ourselves can lead to positive change and better understanding of ourselves. During our journey together, I respect my clients by bringing in a culturally informed and non-judgmental lens, utilizing personal, religious/spiritual, and/or cultural strengths approach to healing. Together we will work on listening to our bodies and minds, integrating both in ways that bring positivity and restoration to ourselves and our relationships.

Psychotherapy is something that happens between people...you and me. It is a process that I expertly and sensitively guide, but it is something that we experience together. Relationships, past and present, may be a source of pain, frustration, or fear...but they are also the key to unlocking your full potential. Together, we will work to alleviate your most pressing problems as well as to develop a fuller understanding of the deeper, underlying issues that keep you stuck in emotional and relational patterns that limit your capacity to more fully give and receive love.

I welcome the unfiltered essence of You. I enjoy working with couples, polycules, and families. As an immigrant, I am passionate about issues regarding ambiguous loss and intergenerational trauma. I practice through a non-pathologizing lens that respects the social and environmental context of your experience. Using Narrative, Cognitive Behavioral, and Attachment theories, I work collaboratively with your past and explore how it informs your present. Together, we can take inventory of ideologies you want to keep, and shed those that were passed down to you without your consent.

From an early age we learn ways of being from the people in our lives and from our circumstances. My approach to therapy is to honor where you’ve been, while helping you move toward growth that starts with your present conditions and perspectives. We often feel like silencing what troubles us is less painful– I join with clients to access this part of ourselves gently and with great care. I see the therapeutic relationship as a place to practice new dynamics and change past patterns of behavior that no longer serve us. Essential to my philosophy is that individuals are impacted by larger, systemic forces.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
