Relational Life Therapist. Cross cultural therapist. I help couples (and other dyads) get to the source of their issues and learn how to create the relationship they long for. Some dyads that see me may be on the brink of relationship rupture and dissolution. Some may be stuck having the same arguments with the same lack of progress and feel like Sisyphus with his boulder. Some may be ahead of the game and seek therapy before they ruin a good thing. All of them want to learn healthy relationship habits that stick. The individual clients I see often struggle with spiritual questions, self acceptance, and/or relationships.

In therapy, I provide individuals with the space to process the challenges they are facing and help them to identify and change the barriers impeding growth (unhelpful thinking styles, behaviors, relationship patterns, etc). I utilize interventions from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy, and offer flexibility to meet people where they are and address individual needs. In my practice, I currently work with adolescents (13-17) and adults (18-60) and my overall goal for family therapy is to improve communication, understanding, and connection between family members.

Sometimes life throws us curveballs, and we might feel stressed, overloaded, or struggle to make decisions. You might be struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, unhealthy relationship patterns, major life decisions, professional and academic performance, or parenting issues. These challenges might be keeping you up at night or are interfering with your peace of mind. As a therapist, my primary goal is to provide a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental environment for my clients, to explore their thoughts and feelings.

NOTE: ...At this time, my sole availability is Tuesdays at 2pm/telehealth only... Our lives consist of welcome routines and happy memories, turning points and challenges. Sometimes it is painfully difficult. Perhaps you have experienced the loss of a dream or a loved one, or been unable to move past a traumatic event. Maybe life feels like a daily rut, void of meaning or joy. Even in the company of people who care about us we can feel alone, sad or overwhelmed. The good news is we can find connection, experience change and move through pain and struggle to a place of greater freedom and happiness.

It's all too much. The never-ending responsibility to care for others at work and meeting your loved one's needs at home is a heavy weight to bear. As a high achiever, you've always been able to take on life's demands. But lately, you're trying to do it all while feeling completely overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with self-doubt, anxiety, and sometimes even feeling debilitated/frozen. At the end of the day, you're disappointed in yourself for being short with others, going through the motions with no real joy, and realizing that none of your own needs were met. You're mentally exhausted, frustrated, & need help getting off this carousel.

Behind every behavior there is a feeling. And beneath every feeling there is need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause and not the symptom. We begin to heal.

I also draw from Attachment-Based Theory, Family Systems, Biofeedback, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
As humans, we often experience significant overwhelm from our sensory environment, trauma, and stress that can increase disassociation and make it difficult to process emotions. I believe that through reconnecting to the body in creative spaces we can improve our understanding and processing of emotions. As an Expressive Arts Therapist I specialize in a trauma-informed, mind-body approach and I work mainly with veterans and service members, complicated grief, family and relationship dynamics, anxiety, LQBTQIA+ community, and non-monogamy relationship structures.

I also teach clinicians in areas I am passionate about, with a focus on trauma-informed, attachment-based, experiential and psychodynamic approaches.
For over 25 years I have helped adults, couples, teens and children find ways to manage anxiety, depression and trauma in order to achieve an increased capacity for enjoyment in relationships and life. I strive to create a safe environment, where taking risks to connect with emotions leads to increased insight and motivation to change. I take an active approach to help clients achieve their goals and resolve their problems. When treating children, I work closely with parents, providing careful guidance about how to help their child develop and thrive.

Each of us sees life through a certain set of lenses. I am especially curious about how my clients view themselves and those they love. I help clients discover how their earliest relationships may be influencing their relationships today. In addition, I support clients working through any grief they are experiencing from relationship losses due to physical death, divorce, or addiction. These kinds of discoveries create options, and more flexibility in how people respond emotionally and behaviorally today

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
