My therapeutic approach is relational, humanistic, psychodynamic, attachment-based, and family systems oriented.
I provide a safe, warm, and relationally based space for clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and concerns without judgment. My style is grounded, gentle, and welcoming. Through deeply listening to my client's story and validating their experience I aim to empower them to better understand and comfort themselves so they can ultimately thrive in their lives independent of therapy.

Do any of these resonate for you? You want to break free from anxiety or depression, or tame your harsh inner-critic. You’ve tried counseling, or read self-help books, or have a mindfulness practice. But your distress persists, the inner critic refuses to be tamed. Maybe you feel stuck professionally. You’d love to feel more fulfilled by your work, but just don’t see how to make this happen. Or maybe you’re looking for a loving relationship, but despite all your efforts, true intimacy remains elusive.

As a clinician, my hope is to help clients by empowering and guiding them as they face unique challenges. I strive to provide a safe, accepting space to share and identify those things in life that often make us feel stuck. I truly believe in the power of human connection and that anyone can make meaningful change when provided with the support and tools to do so. In this life, there is struggle and there is joy, often at the same time. Honoring both is an important part of understanding ourselves and how we can create a pathway forward. It is amazing to witness clients as they grow and evolve during the therapeutic process.

I provide primarily in-person psychotherapy at my office in Teele Square, Somerville. I use a combination of psychodynamic, family, and CBT paradigms in my work. Oftentimes, therapeutic work makes room for a newly coherent sense of past and future; body and mind; self and others. Sometimes, less poetically, it can be all about reviewing the day-to-day to get the grime out of the gears and get moving again.

In his "Sermon on Courage" a great historical figure once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" (King, 1963). Deciding to seek out therapy may be one of the most difficult choices a person makes in a lifetime. It is an act of courage, and those individuals seeking help with their lives when they feel most vulnerable deserve respect and admiration. My goal is to provide you with warmth, attunement, empathy, and years of professional experience as we talk about the things in your life that really matter. Together we work and collaborate in a deeply genuine, person-to-person connection.

I have over a decade of experience in the field, focusing primarily on an approach called harm reduction. Harm Reduction is a grassroots movement that started among people who were at risk for HIV and HepC (queer people, people who use drugs, sex workers). This approach impacts the work I do with all people. It is an approach to behavioral change that emphasizes meeting you where you are without judgement while moving you towards your goals. My work is also trauma informed, works with your mind and body, relational, and informed by social justice and systems of power, privilege, and oppression.

I invite couples, adolescents and adults to identify strengths, acknowledge challenges and develop strategies to solve a range of problems. We can explore ways to save and enhance your relationship. In the first session, I teach tools that you can use immediately to enhance your partnership, open the lines of communication and reconnect as a couple. If you are an overwhelmed parent, I can help you reach out to your teen by employing techniques that can be used in the moment. My professional experience encompasses coping with anxiety, managing chronic illness, grieving losses and achieving balance for an enriched life.

I work with couples, relationships, and families across the full range of gender and sexuality, including folks of LGBTQ+, polyamory / ethical nonmonogamy, and kinky / BDSM experience. Not all clients will want to address any particular issue in therapy. Nevertheless, everyone deserves a therapist who has respect and reverence for them as a whole person.

Therapy should be a space to explore, understand and transcend. As a therapist of color, I value creating a safe space where clients can be their full authentic self. For the last 8 years, I have done community mental health work in the greater Boston area with late teens, adults, elderly, and the LBGTQ+ community. I work with individuals experiencing anxiety and depression to unpack trauma, build self-esteem and a sense of self-worth, and identify/accomplish life goals.

Life can be challenging, and there are moments or life chapters when we seek guidance and support. You might seek counseling to navigate a tough phase in your life or to acquire tools and strategies for managing daily symptoms. Alternatively, you may want to delve deeper into self-awareness and understanding, enabling you to be more present and break free from unhelpful patterns. At times, therapy serves as a platform to process, resolve, and come to terms with difficult or traumatic experiences, freeing you from their lingering impact on your daily life.

Hello/hola! My name is Piero and I am a bilingual couples therapist who was born in Peru, identifies as a gay man, and loves pizza. I also enjoy meeting with individuals and families, and it would be an honor to see how I can help you. I believe the most important thing in the therapeutic relationship is our connection, and that you enjoy meeting with me. You want a therapist who you look forward to seeing and who you feel comfortable and safe with, who is also willing to challenge you and help you grow. I like to be warm and friendly as well as direct and blunt, use humor when appropriate, and am comfortable talking about anything.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
