Clients often come in seeking more of, and for, themselves. It may be loss, transition, or relationship that brings them in, as well as, stress, overwhelm and/or a clear desire to grow. Regardless of the catalyst, all are wanting something more from life. Together, we can support finding more energy, ease and fulfillment in your experience. What makes you feel alive? What gets in the way? These are questions to ask when feeling stuck. There can be complex feelings of fear, disconnect and confusion, blocking the way to motivation, clarity and desire. With openness, compassion and even humor, we can find the way, to more wholeness.

You may be pursuing therapy to increase intimacy or enhance a stable relationship. Alternately, you may be overcome with frustration/grief/anger as, despite best efforts to resolve challenges, you're stuck in repetitive relationship patterns that can no longer be soothed, justified, or ignored. Perhaps you're single or in partnership, suffering from profound loneliness. I can help empower you (and partner(s) to awaken from toxic rules/expectations, and escape the prison of isolation, shame, blame, and silence. This empowerment allows for renewed capacity to give yourself, and those you love, compassion, acceptance, and freedom.

I realize searching for a therapist can be a daunting process; whether you know the specific issue you want to work on or you’re simply unsure, but you just “know” (or have been told) you could use a skilled therapist. I bring to this work my experience, my knowledge, my empathy and humor. I will ask you to walk this journey with me as we explore the paths to growth.

I have been interested in transformative Consciousness work since the early 1970's and have extensive training in both Freudian and Jungian psychology, and varities of Mindfulness Practice. I practiced psychotherapy in greater Boston from 1973 through 1991 and then came to California to study with a Jungian teacher who studied with Carl Jung, M.D., in Zurich Switzerland in the mid 1950's! I currently combine meditative practice with the best multi-modal psychotherapy practices in order to help clients gain the maximum advantage in their lives!

Therapy produces its own unique ecosystem. In the right collaboration, essential growth-oriented risks can be taken, which often results in sustainable transformation. Various tools we develop to emotionally survive our experiences in formative years can become automatic interpersonal response systems we operate from long after they serve us. This can impact the relationship we have with self and others. I strive to bring the utmost compassion and insight into the room while we work together to figure out how one's way of being in the world can become more aligned with concerns of the present circumstance.

So much of life--its changes, its challenges, its day-to-day stressors--can feel overwhelming at times. This overwhelm can create feelings of stuckness, aloneness, or hopelessness that inhibit us from living the lives we wish to live. The wonderful news is these are not permanent conditions. I believe deeply in the healing potential of therapy to free us from emotional overwhelm, reconnect us with our inherent power and inner peace, and grow us in profoundly energizing ways.

I believe that psychotherapy is a collaborative process in which a safe and welcoming space is co-created. This space allows room to supportively explore-with curiosity and self-compassion-the patterns of interaction, behavior, and thoughts that might no longer serve their purpose. I am an accomplished clinician with over 15 years of direct experience. I began my professional career in San Francisco and have since relocated back to my roots in central Massachusetts. I have worked successfully with many clients with a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, strengths, challenges, and coping strategies.

I believe that the journey toward becoming authentically oneself is among the most important work we do. My practice focuses on creating space in which transformation is possible and old patterns can shift into something that allows for growth and possibility. Putting language to complex internal experiences, forging connections, and examining clearly and without shame or judgment the places where stuckness happens are often crucial parts of this process. I work with clients to explore all aspects of identity, focusing on gender and identity development but also intersections of experiences of anxiety, depression, trauma, and dysregulation of mood.

My treatment approach is integrative and personalized to my clients’ needs, focused on building a foundation of trust. I work with clients to identify underlying roots of problems and elicit existing and new strengths and resources. I prefer a holistic approach to treatment which, while based in a psychodynamic framework, draws from my specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, attachment based, trauma-informed and mindfulness modalities. I work with adults ranging from young adulthood through end of life, using a culturally-sensitive approach.

As a trauma-informed, attachment-based therapist, I’m not interested in fixing you. I am interested in simply getting to know you. That’s it. Of course, we will be working together on YOU. But our relationship will be the center of the work. I ask that you show up each session as yourself, as much as you can that day, and we will take it from there. If showing up as yourself sounds scary, I totally understand. I will always work to show up as myself, too. You can expect me to tell you about my cat, or the coffee place I’ve tried recently, or to talk about whatever book I am reading. My goal is for therapy to be a conversation.

I pull from attachment-based neuroscience and trauma-informed practices.
I work with individuals to strengthen their sense of choice and meaning in their lives. I believe we can emerge more whole when we get curious about the parts of us that seem inglorious. I do not believe in oversimplifying the human condition into "good" or "bad" because there is more truth in the spectrum. I want therapy to be accessible, helpful and grounded in the reality that we live our day-to-day lives outside the therapy office. Good therapy extends beyond one hour a week; good therapy informs how we relate to, engage with and move through the real world.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
