Difficult times or life challenges can leave you feeling overwhelmed. You might find yourself trapped in troubling thought patterns and repeated behaviors or need support learning how to respond to various situations. Or maybe your goal is improving your relationships or resolving past hurts and trauma. Are you looking for a safe interactive space in which to tackle difficult subjects, deep seated trauma, or to just say the things you never thought you could say out loud. A place to discover the sadness behind anger and the light in yourself and others. To acquaint yourself with the root problems and thus find real solutions.

I work primarily with individuals who struggle to feel satisfied in their relationships with others as well as in their relationships to themselves, to their core values and aspirations. I find that relationships, to both ourselves and to others, lie at the root of our psychological distress. If our relationships are strained or absent, then we can easily begin to feel anxious and depressed and fall prey to addictive and compulsive behavior. I work best with clients who want to get a bit below the surface and explore other ways of relating.

My desire is to help clients create a more positive and productive life experience in order to transform their lives and break the cycle of self-defeating behaviors. Life is not meant to be just endured, but enjoyed. We all deserve a chance to reach our fullest potential despite experiences which have created limited core beliefs and hold us back in self- destructive patterns of depression, anxiety, fear, and guilt. I believe that therapy should be a collaborative experience.

I see therapy as an opportunity for you to explore the meaning of your life experiences, and how those experiences affect your current situation. I focus first on establishing a comfortable therapeutic relationship where you can feel safe and supported as you investigate new ways of being. I want to help you explore and learn from your history and feelings: I typically ask questions, note patterns, encourage you to interpret events, and reflect your strengths and successes. In the process, you will gain insight, and be able to make deliberate choices that lead to positive changes in your life.

The best psychotherapy helps transform life’s toughest challenges into deep and meaningful growth. So often our greatest healing actually begins in the pain of everyday living whether it shows up in loneliness, anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, family drama, anger, fear, shame or desperation. Gaining new perspectives on self, critically examining what isn’t working, and tapping into our natural strengths can be the most powerful way to get unstuck, develop a deeper sense of self, and cultivate more happiness.

After a twenty-year career in the education field, I am confident we can work together effectively on what has brought you to the point of reaching out for help. My style of counseling combines an awareness of how past experiences impact our thinking and behaviors with a mindfulness-based appreciation of our unchanging core. If you're in a troubling relationship I help to develop safe spaces to deepen connection and intimacy through deep listening and self-compassion. Families looking for help with teens can expect a variety of concrete approaches to engage them involving multiple family members as appropriate.

I also draw from Attachment-Based Theory, Family Systems, Biofeedback, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
As humans, we often experience significant overwhelm from our sensory environment, trauma, and stress that can increase disassociation and make it difficult to process emotions. I believe that through reconnecting to the body in creative spaces we can improve our understanding and processing of emotions. As an Expressive Arts Therapist I specialize in a trauma-informed, mind-body approach and I work mainly with veterans and service members, complicated grief, family and relationship dynamics, anxiety, LQBTQIA+ community, and non-monogamy relationship structures.

We can all become stuck, overwhelmed, hopeless, or just feel we’re not living our best lives for many different reasons. Additionally, the current unrest in society around us can shake a sense of security or predictability we may have held about what our futures hold. These may cause disruptions in sleep and appetite and encourage negative thoughts and moods to grow and persist. Whatever your struggles, I ensure professional care that is collaborative, respectful, and that has your best interests at heart.

The most important part of therapy is building a good rapport with the individual to create a safe and comfortable space. Therapy isn't always easy and neither is the decision to find a therapist; working to ensure clients are comfortable with me and helping them to identify their goals so that the treatment trajectory is predictable, but allows for space to talk about day to day events, if needed. Lastly, ensuring client and therapist personalities align is important as it only enhances the sense of safety and the capacity for positive rapport growth.

Perhaps you feel discouraged and are seeking therapy because you have tried to make changes but haven’t noticed a difference. Maybe you continue to be impacted by overwhelming events from the past. You could be reaching out because you’re experiencing anxiety, sadness, disconnection from others, or difficulty with navigating life transitions and managing stress. Maybe you’ve noticed your child is having a hard time and are reaching out on their behalf. You may want to build up your self esteem and have more fulfilling relationships, or to feel more connected to yourself, to grow, and to enjoy life.

I specialize in working with people feeling challenged by relationships, work, parenting (from pregnancy through empty nest), and aging, as well as people struggling with trauma, grief, and loss. I start from the position that past experiences and attachments have profound effects on our everyday lives, and our abilities to move forward. I have an interest in working with those who navigate multiple cultures and communities (through, for example, racial identity, class background, immigration, religion, gender, and sexuality), as well as those who work in education, healthcare, nonprofit, and creative fields.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
