Sometimes life confronts us with experiences that are disruptive personally or in our relationships resulting in feelings of depression, anxiety, or loss. While these feelings are normal, they can present challenges in terms of maintaining our sense of well-being and our ability to function well in our daily lives. In my view, the purpose of therapy is to help clients understand the source of disruptions, help them learn strategies for coping with and working-through difficult emotions, and become aware of triggering experiences. In this way, clients can learn how to repair disruptions and thereby restore their sense of well-being.
I use a client-centered approach in working with individual clients and couples. This includes creating a supportive, non-judgmental relationship that permits clients to safely explore important issues and helps them to identify their goals for treatment. Additionally, I take a history to better understand the nature of the problem.
I have had extensive experience working as a clinical social worker in private practice and in a community mental health center. In addition, I worked in medical education for 20 years teaching clinical skills to psychiatric residents in various therapeutic modalities and Behavioral Medicine to family medicine residents.
