I specialize in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, depression and personality disorders and work primarily with adults and adolescents. My approach is strengths-based, person-centered and sees the client as the expert in their own experiences. It is my belief that therapist and client are in equal partnership with the goal of empowering people to take control of their lives. There are so many reasons people go to therapy, but at the center of every struggle and success is fundamental self-worth. The life you want starts with the belief you deserve it. You can learn more about me and my approach at wildwellcounseling.com.

Hello there! I'm Terry Coy, an Individual, Marriage, and Family Therapist. For many this process and seeing so many names of therapy or mental health names can be overwhelming. With this in mind, I would like to introduce myself in what I would call session zero. No fees, get to know me a little bit, and hopefully we get a head start on building trust and comfort. First, congratulations on making it this far. Already, although it may not seem like much, you have taken a HUGE step toward improving your life. Therapy, because of myths and cultural stigmas, may seem either scary or useless.

I utilize techniques from Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Emotion Focused (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Gottman and Attachment-Based Therapy.
I believe that in order to be happy and healthy, we must nourish the whole person. As you begin your journey towards healing, I recognize the great courage it takes to seek help. My goal is to help you discover your true potential and form healthy relationships along the way. I strongly believe that each of us holds the power to change and create the life that we desire. You may feel stuck, not know exactly where to go for help, who the best person would be to talk to, or what to expect from therapy. These are normal questions and concerns. I want to assure you...You are at the right place!

I take an attachment-based, trauma-focused approach and aim to create a relationship and environment where you feel safe to explore the depths of your experience.
Clients usually come to me when they're processing through trauma, trying to address anxiety and depression symptoms, and wanting to live a more vibrant and aligned life. Most people I work with are usually at a point where they recognize that something feels stuck, and they want to make a change but need support building momentum.

For parent/child sessions I utilize attachment-based therapies to build connection.
You can feel it coming- some word spoken or look given, and you’re quickly overcome with emotion you feel incapable of controlling. Or maybe it’s your child. You feel helpless as you watch, not understanding why they react so strongly. You’ve read books, prayed, and sought advice, but life still feels so unmanageable. You wonder, why is this so hard? Our past is often riddled with pain we’ve yet to overcome, some we don't even remember. When the pain points show up, we often find ourselves reacting to triggers rather than responding to who’s in front of us. We can’t erase past hurts, but they don’t have to keep us stuck.

I practice from an attachment-based, emotion focused lens with individuals and couples.
Relationships are the fabric of our lives, weaving all of our life experiences together. Bonds of every kind can be challenging, and sometimes leave us feeling rejected or afraid. Out of a desire for closeness, we can sometimes cower or lash out (without knowing why). Let us work together to discover how to find (and keep!) healthy relationships.

My clients are solution focused and ready to work on creating change. Therapy takes courage. Be proud of taking that step. All are welcome. I work with clients who have been maligned by society simply for being themselves. I am OutCare certified. I've done quite a bit of work with those who are aligned with nature spirituality. You will find acceptance and a listening ear here.

Waitlist for new clients
I'm currently adding ONLY couples to my waitlist. I am trained to target emotional experiences to activate internal healing and external connection. I assist couples by facilitating an environment that safely moves folks towards security in self and towards one another in vulnerability so that bonding can replace the need for self-preservation. With individuals, I welcome all parts of each person as they establish security in self helping parts recognize: "parts cope, self heals." I view people as "stuck" and not "sick," and I believe in each person is a healer. In couple therapy, I hold this true: "one therapist, three healers."

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
