Therapy is about allowing ourselves space to process and to heal. I specialize in working with individuals who struggle with past and present trauma, anxiety, mood disorders, and relationship issues. I offer a warm, nonjudgemental space to process your emotions and experiences and gain awareness into patterns and blind spots that you would like to change. Through this awareness, you can then start to foster meaningful change to create the life you want to live. Living a fulfilling life is rooted in intentionality, and intentionality starts with awareness.

The common approach I use in therapy is attachment-based work, processing the client’s attachment with their past and present support people, family, and loved ones.
My name is Marissa Krager, I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed School Social Worker (PEL) in the state of Illinois. I like to look at my clients as a whole, (environment, support, interests, strengths, weaknesses) not just individually. I go by my client’s pace, assessing how you are working in counseling and understanding what you're able to process/handle in those moments, never adding pressure. Specializing in trauma, anxiety, depression, and general counseling.

My practice specializes in providing individual therapy to women of all ages who are struggling with attachment trauma, anxiety, divorce, motherhood, and relationship conflict. My specializations include attachment focused EMDR, perinatal mental health, insecure attachment, anxiety, and trauma. I offer attachment informed psychotherapy which is based off the principle that early relationships with caregivers profoundly influence our ability to trust and feel safe with others. This can show up most commonly in our adult relationships.

Many of us struggle with difficulties in relationships, personal grief, and emotional or physical pain. We often see these as obstacles to healing with a hopeless outlook of change. We need answers, reasons, and certainty to soothe our longings or access "progress." So often this shrouds our ability to slow down and look inward. My aim is to empower you to navigate these complexities with courage and resilience. Through a holistic approach that addresses both emotional and physical patterns formed throughout a lifetime of relationships and experiences, you can learn to honor your story the way no one else can. Come as you are.

Taking the first step to reach out for help takes courage. So often, people have lived with their struggles for years thinking it's just the way they will always feel. The good news is that is most definitely not the case. Support is available and connection is truly the key. At the heart of being human is our universal need for connection. My approach to therapy is relational and attachment based; meaning providing a safe and secure environment that allows for self expression is the starting point, the middle and the end.

I have studied and trained extensively in Psychoanalytic models of psychotherapy including Self-Psychology, Jungian Psychology and Attachment-Based Psychotherapy.
In a word, my approach to therapy is relational. I am at my best when I am centered, curious and genuinely engaged in my client's experience... exploring, nuancing and understanding their unique perspective and the struggles they are facing. I believe in the importance of finding the right "fit" between client and therapist and it is for that reason that I strive to be authentic and fully engaged in every session. My training, areas of specialization and personal style are well suited for those who might be seeking to go deeper in their understanding of themselves and their relationships.

I have received intensive training in Emotionally Focused Theory (EFT), an attachment-based model, which frames my work with both couples and individuals.
The key to our well-being is defining and developing a healthy relationship with ourselves and others. For over 20 years, I have worked with individuals and couples to establish therapeutic relationships based on safety, trust, and acceptance. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I’ve worked with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, loneliness, loss, relationship distress, and difficult life transitions. While formally trained in psychodynamic theory, my approach is flexible recognizing the unique needs and strengths of each individual.

My approach to practice is loss and trauma-informed, from an attachment-based, emotionally-focused therapy perspective, always considering the complexity of multicultural aspects that shape our lives.
I am passionate in working with relational issues, either when helping individuals or couples and families. I believe that our relationships have an essential impact on our well-being. I am yet to hear a client or a friend or a family member talk about distress that is not somehow associated to a relational issue... Aren't we all longing to belong and to find safety and security in the arms of our loved ones (partners, parents or very dear friends that are like family)? And yet, these are precisely the people that can hurt us the most.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
