You do not have to have lived through something literally life-threatening to be a trauma survivor. If you didn't get your basic or emotional needs consistently met during infancy and early childhood, you likely struggle in your adult relationships. You might be overly clingy, avoidant, or self-sabotaging with your friendships and romantic partners. Or maybe, for you, it shows up as anxiety, avoidance, dissociation, low self-worth, poor boundaries, and even self-destructive behaviors. This is called complex trauma or attachment-based trauma, and it can be healed!

Hi there! My name is Amberly Ellis and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist. I approach counseling from an integrative, attachment-based, and interpersonal neurobiology lens, recognizing the link between behavior, the nervous system, and interpersonal connection. I believe the behaviors children and teens display are merely their way of communicating a need - a need to connect, a need to be known, a need to be heard, and a need for felt safety. It is my goal to not just help my clients “fix the problem,” but to help build understanding, connection, and a victorious mind.

Are you ready to integrate loving kindness and compassion into the relationship you have with yourself and others? This may seem an impossible healing for those who have endured relational betrayal, death, loss, hurt or trauma. However, shifting focus towards meaning, resilience, and possibility can liberate you from your past and present suffering. What does this mean for you and your loved ones? It means here is an invitation to sit with a non-judgmental human being while you recover, connect, and heal in new ways. It means you may shed old roles, affirm new strengths, and learn others with vulnerability and without guard.

With an Attachment-based approach we can explore your relationship with others and yourself.
Do you find it easier to be present and strong for others, but find it hard to do the same for yourself? You might feel alone, misunderstood, and stuck. There is so much to work through, and yet you don’t know where to start. Sometimes the hardest yet most liberating step is opening up to someone.

Using approaches like Attachment-Based, Emotionally Focused (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), & Gottman Therapies, I help couples learn to communicate, to know each other intimately, and to infuse trust and connection in their relationship.
When you’re struggling, as a couple or individually, it can feel overwhelming, lonely and sometimes downright debilitating. Do you get stuck in the same, old patterns, worry about the future, regret or re-live the past? Do you wonder if you can ever truly, be happy? Do you think that, “relationships and life are just hard”. It doesn’t HAVE to be this way! As a therapist whose been working in the field for over 25 years I’ve guided both individuals and couples to grow, change and live lives they love, over and over!

In therapy, Heather meets Adults (aged 18-80), Couples, Families, and Teens (12+) where they are in hopes to come alongside them and understand them holistically. She utilizes a Humanistic and Attachment-based approach to create a non-judgmental space, and to understand each person within their unique relational and systemic contexts. Heather hopes to see clients come to know themselves better, find hope and healing within their stories, and to encourage them to live within their values.

I use an attachment-based, somatic approach to healing and include mindfulness and interventions from nonviolent communication, DBT, CBT, and ACT to build stabilization, engender self awareness and growth, and enable healing from events in the past that are re-experienced in the present, helping clients earn secure attachment to find safety and trust within.
Grounded in experiential and existential orientations, I work to understand the meaning you make of life. I walk with you to help identify purpose, values, and behaviors to live more authentically and deliberately. I foster a supportive, interpersonal therapeutic relationship, and my holistic approach taps into the body's innate wisdom to promote adaptive responses and facilitate healing. By choosing to move through discomfort--a normal and healthy response to life's uncertainties--you expand opportunities for growth. My prior career in business and technology enables me to understand the unique demands of corporate professionals.

I take an integrative approach, pulling from Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Attachment-based Therapy.
I have a curious mind, a compassionate heart, and aspiration to help people. As a Master’s level clinician, I am privileged to walk alongside clients on their personal growth and healing journey. Choosing to seek counseling can be intimidating and scary, and it can also be courageous and brave. We all experience challenging and stressful times in life. As humans, we are made for connection and don’t have to do everything on our own. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the foundation for creating a safe and non-judgmental environment for my clients to express their unique needs.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
