Hi there! My name is Amberly Ellis and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist. I approach counseling from an integrative, attachment-based, and interpersonal neurobiology lens, recognizing the link between behavior, the nervous system, and interpersonal connection. I believe the behaviors children and teens display are merely their way of communicating a need - a need to connect, a need to be known, a need to be heard, and a need for felt safety. It is my goal to not just help my clients “fix the problem,” but to help build understanding, connection, and a victorious mind.

I have experience working with a variety of needs and concerns, including anxiety, major life changes, adoption, attachment issues, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, anger management, bipolar disorder, borderline personality, depression, and self-regulation.

Hi! My name is Sara Brisbois and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I counsel using an integrative and interpersonal approach. I believe everyone has things that come up throughout life that they need help working through. I also believe that a therapeutic relationship alone can be incredibly healing and helpful. By creating that therapeutic relationship, I am then able to personalize therapy to best suit each client and meet them where they are through a variety of approaches.

We encounter and are a part of so many relationships: self, friendship, familial, interpersonal, etc. They create the different roles we have in our lives. When any of these relationships are in turmoil, distress, conflict, or other stressful states, it causes our lives to be thrown off sync. We begin to struggle with anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, self-esteem, grief, and we lack overall support. If your goal is to find balance, re-create positive and healthy dynamics, and to feel and provide support in and from your relationships, you have found the right place! Let's process through what's happening together.

I help highly intelligent over-achievers trade anxiety for confidence without feeling like a failure. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, successful, and funnier than a viral meme, life is hard. When they first come in, they feel trapped by their image. They like being thought of as organized and successful, but inside they feel a total fake. When they stop to think about it, they realize they don't even feel like themselves anymore... it's like they've morphed into what other people expect them to be. Their greatest fear is people seeing the real person behind their mask and rejecting them.

As a couple and family therapist, I'm passionate about my helping people address all kinds of relational issues. Relationship concerns often look different for different people, but to me, they include anything that negatively impacts you or how you interact with people in your life. I believe the stories we tell ourselves have a very powerful impact on our lives and how we see the world. Many times, those stories end up holding us back in some way. I guide the process as you change them to be more in line with the life you want to live. My goal is to help people create a life where they feel empowered, courageous, and authentic.

My work is attachment-based and trauma-informed.
Accepting new clients. I believe therapy is a collaborative process between the two of us. Our work together will help you live a meaningful and purposeful life, feel safe in your body, understand your behavioral and attachment patterns, and heal from relational trauma. Our earliest relationships inform the way we respond to situations past and present. As adults, we may notice some of these patterns are more harmful than helpful. Through this framework, I incorporate acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), internal family systems (IFS), and body-based approaches into our work together.

I believe that engaging in therapy is a courageous choice. Exploring our own stories can be terrifying if it brings up pain, heartache, or fear. Many of us spend years trying to find ways to escape these negative feelings only to feel even more stuck. Therapy offers us another choice-one that can move us through our experiences and into a place of hope where we can feel more peace and connection to ourselves and to others.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
