The three main approaches I take when providing care are attachment-based therapy, somatic therapy, and polyvagal theory.
My name is Whitney Catoe, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. I'm passionate about whole-body wellness and taking a holistic approach to assessing mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. I have worked with clients struggling with a number of different obstacles. I have a history of working in the substance abuse field (detox facilities, methadone clinics, dual diagnosis), mood disorders as well as trauma. Many of my clients have experienced some level of hardship and are looking to understand and overcome while honoring the impact their experiences are having on their minds and body.

You're an ambitious woman struggling with anxiety, frustration, anger, and/or sadness. Romantic relationships can reopen old wounds where we discover we still need healing. In addition, your relationships with your father, mother, and siblings can also leave you feeling unsettled, anxious, and angry (aka - triggered). You desire healing from your childhood and beyond. You've tried talk therapy in the past with little success. Maybe you've tried multiple therapists. Together, we will get to the root of your issues and help you find the healing you desire. I offer 60/90/120 minute sessions. I am certified in EMDR.

My ideal client aims to engage in an active partnership to build self-awareness and take action to make a change. I will give you feedback and challenge you, which is not everyone’s cup of tea! I work best with those suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, overwhelm, trauma, or emotional flooding. You have to be strong. All. The. Damn. Time. And that’s just become too much. Even for you. You have BIG feelings and may even cry when you’re alone, but hide them so the world can’t use them against you. You’re exhausted. But you can’t slow down for fear of what may happen if painful memories overwhelm you. Your internal voice is relentlessly mean and you want to shut it up, but you don’t even know if it’s possible to truly accept yourself. You know far too many people have too much access to your physical space or emotional energy, but you learned this is how to keep people around and saying “no” leaves you alone or rejected.

I love to work with clients who are ready for change. I often work with survivors of trauma looking for a holistic lens to wellness. I believe in the value and strength of the human spirit and deeply enjoy helping others discover that, as well. By creating an environment that is safe and confidential, we can work toward true healing, growth, balance, and authenticity--living a life that is true to who you are.

I believe that each person innately holds the answers to their own healing, yet healing can often be blocked by deeply embedded societal systems, stigmatization, oppression, and past trauma. I believe that each person can discover, trust, and give voice to their most authentic self with support. Therapeutically, I endeavor to co-create solutions with those experiencing unwanted effects of trauma which can be experienced and manifest in our lives in many ways. My experience in counseling and passion is in helping clients recover from addiction, unresolved trauma, and adverse childhood experiences.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
