I am an experienced clinician, who strongly believes that therapy is a partnership. I see my role as helping an individual arrive at mutually agreed upon goals, which will lead to a better quality of life. I am an active participant in our sessions and believe that warmth and sometimes humor are an important part of the therapy process. My therapeutic style is engaged, active and pragmatic. My goal is to create a supportive yet challenging environment, while focusing on getting to the main issues quickly and safely.

One size never fits all. Each person and issue needs its own caring approach. Therapy includes: DBT, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, internal family systems, and trauma work, all with acceptance, warmth, and healing. Gains rely on maximum challenge with maximum support. I have successfully struggled in my life as a son, husband, and father of four. I know the pain of being wounded and the rewards of healing. For over 50 years I have helped kids and families as a teacher, school counselor, therapist, and supervising professor in three graduate counseling programs, including the Captains' Masters at the USMA at West Point.

Life is full of chaos and uncertainty right now. It may have brought you stress, anxiety, worries, sadness or grief. You may have had to deal with many life changes, some that you want and some that you don't. It makes sense to feel off, overwhelmed, and like you lost your footing. Wouldn't it be great to take a moment to breathe, regroup and learn how to adapt to life’s challenges? Clients come to me to feel seen, heard and sort through what is happening for them. They have overcome challenges in life and now want to find peace and healing. They want to be confident, calm, and true to themselves.

Throughout the 40 years I have been helping clients improve their lives, and helping therapists improve professional skills, the resilience of the human spirit continually amazes me. I see therapy as a collaboration, my job being to listen carefully to the issues worrying/frustrating you and your job to present your concerns to me. Together we will develop a working relationship with the goal of overcoming problems and fears. Every person who walks through my door is treated as a unique individual entitled to a personally satisfying life. It is my pleasure to join you on that journey.4

Most people who come in to see me usually wind up uttering a version of this in the first weeks: “This is not how I thought my life would turn out.” They seem unaware that many of us have felt this way at one time or another. People are hurting when they make a call to a therapist. They’re “stuck,” and yet anxious about the therapy process. They want change. But how to go about making it happen? Llfe is by definition unpredictable. No matter how we plan or adequately prepare for it, it comes down to sorting out the difficult from the more difficult when decisions have to be made.

When we saw mental health being unaffordable and incomplete, we took on this endeavor of launching our unique model of mental health wellness throughout many cities and states. Before we started, we saw a great demand for receiving affordable, comprehensive, and enjoyable mental healthcare. So, we started our company to provide counseling that is affordable on the base prices, but also extremely affordable through our unmatched sliding scale models. We also didn't sacrifice the quality of care delivered, but even increased it. We now offer in-person and virtual visits in CT, FL, NJ, NV, and PA.

These are very stressful times, and life can be so very hard with different challenges that we face over the years. Adults deserve a place where they feel welcomed to sort through their feelings, whether it be related to past trauma or current challenges. Families need a place to work through their struggles and not feel that they are alone in dealing with problems that can arise while raising children, to create healthy communication, and healing in their family. Children and teens may feel like coming to therapy means they are different, so its important that everyone who comes to therapy feels welcome and heard.

I'm experienced in both modern and historical approaches; psychodynamic, attachment-based, internal family systems, addiction, and psychosynthesis.
When we feel stuck in our lives, for weeks, or years, it can take a toll on us in ways we may not see. Time passes and we don't feel any further in our life. We're left feeling exhausted and alone in our pain. My name is Ryan, and I provide therapy for people who are looking to break free. Whether it's poor relationships, anxiety, depression, substance or process addictions, trauma, or a desire to deepen their connection with others, I help my clients find strength, flexibility, and compassion, returning themselves to the feeling of being whole.

My style is warm, honest and nonjudgmental, and my practice draws from psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness, EMDR and attachment-based neuroscience.
Everyone hits a bump in the road from time to time. Maybe you're going through a difficult transition, such as the loss of a job or loved one. Maybe you worry too much...but can't seem to stop. Maybe you struggle with difficult relationships--or spend so much time caring for others that you've neglected yourself. Sometimes we just get stuck, and we aren't sure why. Sharing our concerns with a caring professional can help us find solutions, improve our sense of self and our relationships, provide safety and warmth, and help us find more meaning in our lives.

When a particular area of life is less rewarding or is problematic, you may seek assistance rediscovering your path to mental health. Understanding that therapy is more likely to be helpful when you feel comfortable with your therapist, and hopeful about the therapy, my approach emphasizes accessing each person’s unique strengths and resources in order to facilitate growth, new learning, and fulfillment. I use a person-centered integrative approach drawing from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and somatic theories to work collaboratively with you toward mutually agreed-upon goals.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
