At the root of all psychological and emotional distress, is the absence of/or lack of love, acceptance and belonging. When this need is not met, we consciously and subconsciously find other ways to fill the void, often through self-destructive behaviors and emotional self-loathing. The vast majority of people do not know how to love themselves or find value in who they are, especially when coming from backgrounds of abuse, addiction or abandonment. When a person understands their value, their self-worth, their reason for being, the psychological and emotional distress dissipates, and behaviors change.

Symptoms of depression and anxiety impact the way we function with others in a non-beneficial manner. Often times family problems, work related stress, or issues in relationship can leave you feeling tired, angry, sad, and/or lonely. Therapeutic services can help you improve your relationship with your spouse, children, co-workers, and yourself. We function best when we know how to have a healthy relationship with ourselves, our bodies, and others.

We all go through difficult times. We face more challenges today than ever with family, careers, relationships, and parenting. Therapy can be extremely helpful in learning new ways to cope with our complex lives and learn to live more fully. No one has to walk this journey alone. I don't have all the answers, but I would love to help you discover your own strengths and uniqueness and help you flourish. I graduated from Fresno Pacific University and completed my Master’s Degree at the Seminary. I would love to help you live your best life.

Sometimes life throws us curveballs and yes they hurt. But having someone to listen to the pain, frustration, and every other emotion that you are going through can be a starting point to healing. There are even things that are “in” our control but maybe we make some poor choices or forget that we are capable of making better ones and that you have more power than you think. I can offer that sacred, safe space, without judgment or blame and help you find hope and clarity.

My work with clients for over 29 years has allowed me to be part of a special journey with each person, couple, and family. My experience in serving as a psychotherapist, with multiple ages, socioeconomic, and culturally diverse clients has allowed me to learn how clients have needs and life goals, which are part of their life journey. I work with clients to identify who is writing their story in positive and adverse ways, which causes them to be 'stuck', wounded, or lost. During the therapy process, we explore skills and/or deep healing to assist them in moving toward healthier experiences, relationships, and living with purpose.

I enjoy working with clients of various ages and backgrounds, but particularly enjoy working with teens, young adults, adults and families who are living through substantial life changes and transitions in the areas of school, work, and relationships.

No matter your age, life can be unpredictable and can take you down difficult emotional journeys. For children and teens expressing emotions verbally can be even harder due to their developmental level. Situations like divorce, moving, a death in the family, school problems, friend issues and etc. often lead to negative behavioral changes or withdrawing. This is often due to their inability to express themselves properly. My role as a therapist is to create a comfortable and safe place for my clients to process their emotions and explore their inner self in a way that will help promote healing.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
