In order to help clients access these resources I utilize empirically proven techniques within an attachment-based, humanistic and psychodynamic framework.
Today is the day you have decided enough is enough! Taking this first step takes a great deal of courage, and you will need courage for the journey you are about to embark upon. It could be a life transition that has you feeling lost, or you may find yourself stuck, repeating the same patterns and suffering from the same symptoms (anxiety, depression, guilt, shame, etc.). The fact that you have found this page means that you are ready to find relief, contentedness, and even joy, and I am so excited for you!

Whatever is troubling you, know that you are not alone. The majority of us have been struggling in some way lately. You may have noticed an increase in unwelcome symptoms such as anxiety, anger, fear, or depression. Although we hate to experience these symptoms, they can be like guides for us, telling us that it is time for some good growth. I can support you on this journey.

Do you feel lost, or like you don't belong? Do you feel different from those around you? Has socialization become a draining performance? Maybe you know what the mask is covering up, or maybe you just know you have to pretend to be ‘happy’ or ‘normal.' Do you have a loved one that is struggling? Maybe you are struggling to understand their experience. What if you knew you weren’t alone? I believe I can help you. We can work on the things that are making you feel overwhelmed now, as we work towards long term change.

Now able to accept new clients again. Thanks for your patience! I will provide a safe place and work with you, beside you, as you work on defining/becoming your best self. Stuck? Change is difficult, but possible. There is no judgment here--lest I be judged. I believe everyone is doing the best they can with the tools they have. Many of us are just in need of additional tools. I believe we are products of our families of origin and carry forward what we learned from them--healthy or unhealthy. If you're stuck, I'd like to help you get unstuck. A sense of humor is a must.

While talk therapy offers critical and necessary support during overwhelming periods of life, some of us feel as if life contains an "overwhelming period" on a nearly daily basis. Neurodivergent Therapies' owner (Alyson "Rae" Pittman, LPC) began wondering how the efficacy of therapy could be improved and the needed timeline shortened. One treatment addition for both of these goals is Neurofeedback (NFB) Training, a non-invasive and non-medication option for teaching your brain the rhythms, patterns, and "dance steps" your brain has yet to effectively learn.

My primary experience is in working with individuals and couples to heal relationship wounds, recover from trauma, and find new ways to interact with life’s most stubborn issues. My ideal clients probably have really tough problems, and they may be hurting very deeply, but they are also ready to try on new thoughts and behaviors to find healing and their "new normal." I work with those suffering from PTSD symptoms, severe anxiety and/or depression, as well as individuals and couples in affair recovery, blended family situations, and those going through major life changes.

I am passionate about working with individuals who are struggling with symptoms resulting from any type of overwhelming experience or trauma, especially early life trauma and neglect. Through my years of practice, I have seen that it's often true that, while people can experience great healing with talk therapy alone, it doesn't always feel like enough. Over the last 12 years, this has led me to pursue more specialized training in trauma-centered interventions, including Somatic Experiencing and clinical neurofeedback.

I am particularly interested in working with clients who are hoping to overcome perfectionism, self-doubt, and uncertainty in order to live the lives they dream for themselves. These challenges often show up as frequent worry, difficulty making decisions, persistent self-criticism, and taking on excessive responsibility for others. I also find fulfillment in supporting those who are navigating life transitions, whether this be a new career or becoming a parent, or a less expected transition such as grief or divorce. Additionally, I have extensive experience working with those who are recovering from traumatic experiences.

My approach to therapy begins with a belief that we are all wired for connection. Connection happens when we are heard and understood in relationship to others. I engage our work through compassion, curiosity, humor, perspective, and honesty. I believe that creating a space to slow down and tune into our emotions, beliefs, and responses is a primary way to heal, grow, and authentically relate to others. My passion in counseling is to create a relationship built on safety, trust, and hope, where people feel accepted and challenged to grow in new and meaningful ways. .

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
