It is helpful for all of us to develop the skills that enable us to step back from emotion-laden life events (both good and bad) in order to gain perspective and insight. This allows us to interact optimally with those in our lives who can significantly impact our well-being. Therapy provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment that promotes self-exploration and the development of insight into our own behaviors as well as the behaviors of others. Identifying the potential "whys" behind our actions and reactions can be empowering in the context of personal change and development.

You're here because you're looking for a therapist and that probably means that something doesn't feel good in your life right now, and you want some help. I've been there, and know what it's like to struggle with the challenges life has thrown at you. My approach is collaborative, transparent, and direct. I use humor and warmth in my sessions while matching your tone and what you are bringing in so that you can feel comfortable opening up about topics that you find difficult or may have a hard time communicating. Together we'll tackle hard topics and focus on improving your well-being.

Life dissatisfaction may be a result of one or a serious of events that can interfere with the way we feel and how we interact with others. Such dissatisfaction may lead to self-restricting behaviors in our attempt to relieve our depression, abandonment, anger, guilt, shame, grief, loss, trauma, and anxiety. What we come to know as self-restricting behaviors are a serious of coping mechanisms that we develop over time in our unconscious attempt to protect and or relieve pain and suffering.

I think we can all agree...life can be tough...but so are you! You have survived all of your worst days and the fact that you are here means that there are thoughts swirling around in your brain that drew you here. Are you looking to take a leap you've been too afraid to make? Are you feeling the stress and pressure from work, school, home or all of the above? Do you have things you want to say out loud to the world, but haven't quite found your voice? It can be so easy to go through life pretending to be okay, but I hope to provide a space that makes you feel comfortable enough to share when you aren't.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
