I know in this post pandemic world it can be extremely stressful filled with anxiety and dread. It is always a good idea to have a friendly listening ear to help alleviate your depressive and anxiety feelings. I bring with me more than ten years of clinical experience in cognitive behavioral, narrative, and talk therapies. In addition I work with clients who struggle with negative self talk and other anxiety disorders. I also work with traumatic issues such as survivors of physical and emotional abuse. I work with childhood trauma as well using the psychodynamic approach.

If you often find yourself feeling out of place or struggling inside—even though other people think you have it all together—I can help. I work with individual adults who are familiar with psychotherapy and want deeper, root-level healing for symptoms related to anxiety and relational trauma. This can include concerns around relationships, life transitions, overthinking, people-pleasing, self-doubt, self-limiting beliefs and thought patterns, boundaries, and self-criticism. My style is active, spacious, and focused on supporting you in slowing down, tuning into yourself, and feeling the healing wisdom that thrives within you.

No one comes to a therapist because they need a lecture. You're here because you need a partner on your personal journey to healing. Good therapy is an invitation into a dialogue, not a monologue where someone "thera-splains" yourself to you. It's my passion to help my clients with self-esteem, depression, anxiety, parenting and finding enjoyment in daily life. Working together, we can help you re-write personal narratives, identify and tackle goals, process trauma, change destructive patterns and master tools to navigate life's challenges with grace.

Therapy provides a special opportunity to slow down and focus on what's most important to you, with skillful guidance and support. I create a nonjudgmental environment for you to explore the difficulties, heartaches, old wounds, stuck places, or joys and celebrations of your life. This process involves listening to the wisdom of your body and emotions as well as your mind. Collaborating with you, I will support you to develop a more intimate relationship with yourself and your many facets, to expand your capacity to satisfyingly connect with others, and to illuminate and transform what blocks you from living your best life.

Psychotherapy is one of many ways to improve the quality of your life and your relationships with others. Most people looking for a relationship therapist wish they could make changes, but don't know how. What they have tried has not worked. Everyone has irresolvable issues. Never do we have the exact same desire for money in the bank, sexual frequency, social activities, neatness, or parenting ideas (etc.) This is built-in conflict. This built-in conflict carries with it the seeds for growth and connection that would not happen in any other way. Living in distress is so awful and so curable. What I do is start with creating safety, so it is safe for you to talk to your partner and be heard, from there needed conversations can occur.

Life is complex. It is natural to feel overwhelmed, stuck, and confused. In therapy we can meet our human complexity with kindness and curiosity. Through a creative process we open up a pathway to loosen stuck places and move toward deeper flourishing. This can lead to a greater sense of meaning, belonging, creativity, and self-acceptance.

Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed and weighed down by critical self-talk? Is it difficult to stand up for your needs and set healthy boundaries? Many of us have the desire to be truly listened to, seen, and deeply understood. I believe all of us have the answers within ourselves and our unique experiences, and sometimes we just need a little help from someone else to help us discover them. I'm not going to talk your ear off or mansplain your nervous system to you. I will listen, we will talk through things, I will challenge the way you look at things, there may be tears, and there will definitely be laughter.

Maybe you are dealing with new and difficult circumstances, or maybe you are ready to confront issues that have been bothering you for some time. Wherever you are, I will meet you there, help you discover where you would like to be, and move in that direction with you. Psychological pain often comes from being stuck in patterns of thought, behavior, and emotional response that were necessary to our self-preservation at one point, but that are no longer serving that purpose. You have gotten where you are today thanks to your inner strengths; my job is to help you build on those strengths while helping you change harmful patterns.

When making the complex and vulnerable choice to begin therapy, you should be able to trust your therapist and feel safe sharing your story. This is why compassion and empathy are my priorities when building our therapeutic alliance. Together, we will collaborate on an individualized plan for change and growth that is consistent with your values and cultural identities. Every human is a unique mix of identities, experiences, fears, dreams, and values. I am well-versed in theory and operate from a foundation of science. However, I also believe that it is essential to recognize the humanity behind everyone’s struggles and actions.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Oakland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
