For those seeking an Asian therapist, I provide a perspective that understands your unique upbringing.
Life is sometimes unexpectedly difficult and suffering can be inevitable. However, how you respond to life circumstances can drastically change your ability to enjoy life. I have worked with those that believed in lies about themselves after a traumatic incident, childhood, or their own minds. These lies can be crippling and result in anxiety, depression, addictions, school related difficulties, stress, anger, parenting, communication difficulties, relational issues, family problems, job dissatisfaction and more. I provide different perspectives that encourage personal healing and relief. Change your mind change your life

I have over 20 years of clinical experience and have come to believe that fostering a trusting and compassionate therapeutic relationship can help us feel empowered and confident in our own healthy sense of self. As a South Asian/Indian woman who identifies as a person of color and within the LGBTQIA+ community, I recognize a need for folks to have a therapist who understands these issues. My approach is collaborative, client-centered, strength-based, and solution-focused. Mazu Master, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, childhood abuse, relational issues, and Asian American/minority issues, including cultural identity, racism, and family conflict.
Individuals raised by immigrant parents have all experienced the cultural and generational gaps growing up. These conflicts can range from daily misunderstandings to complex intergenerational trauma. As a Korean-American, I specialize in supporting young adults and families understand how these conflicts impact their lives and provide a safe space of healing to overcome these difficulties. People who experience these conflicts can sometimes develop issues separating themselves from their inner critic, trusting themselves, feeling stuck in a vicious cycle, a lack of purpose and identity, and a sense of emptiness about the future.

Stressful life events, endless thoughts in the night, and emotions that seem out of control can be overwhelming and isolating. Exhaustion and mental health stigma can further push quality of life and sense of fulfillment out of reach. As an Asian American psychologist in California, I am passionate about supporting my community through thoughtful counseling that cultivates deeper understanding and healing. I have presented research and workshops on the intersection of mental health and diversity, and have over 8 years of psychotherapy experience focused on building awareness, learning coping skills, and improving quality of life.

Immediate openings in CA via telehealth, offering in person sessions Saturday morning in San Diego. Over 20 years of my practice, I have seen almost every issue stems from our self-concept. The relationship we have with our self-concept prevents our ability to achieve our full potential and happiness. I can help you find the attention and honor you deserve first, then tackle your particular challenges at the present time. "Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life" -J. K. You feel like you "should" be able to figure it out on your own, right? Maybe there's pressure from family, culture, gender, religion or your circumstances. But trying to do this alone is exhausting - you're not even sure you're getting it right. Meanwhile, you've looked for ways to cope in places you aren't proud of, then regret it. Addiction takes many forms such as Technology, Working Out, Social Media, Shopping, Video Gaming, Working, Gambling, Cannabis or Alcohol. Sound familiar? Having the courage to seek services can feel overwhelming or even embarrassing. Deep breath. Together, we can learn skills to get you back in control.

Therapy is a collaborative process between the therapist and the client. I use my clinical expertise to help my clients achieve what they want and need, but I expect my clients to be active participants in their healing process. My clients tend to gain new insights and deeper understanding of their issues and obtain new skills and changes by going through their healing process with me.

Sometimes it can be really challenging to make time for ourselves and for our mental health. For some of us, it's even more difficult when our identities and culture held no space for our feelings or emotions. We may have had to put up with crossed boundaries, invalidated feelings, unrealistic expectations, and conditional love that depended on how much we have accomplished. Those difficult and maybe even traumatic experiences that we, and our families, have lived through may have been written off as "this is just how things are." Although we may want to rest and pause, we instead might begin to feel shame or guilt for doing so.

Hi there, I'm Wing Yee! You may have been feeling anxious for a while or persistently sad; you may want to correct some dysfunctional patterns in your life and improve the quality of your relationships; you may feel stuck and unable to move forward in life. Perhaps you have found yourself entangled with self-blame or even self-hatred. Whatever you have gone through in the past or what you are going through right now, you do not have to continue to suffer. You have taken the first step towards change.

If you're experiencing anxiety, depression, anger management issues, or chronic pain, seeing a therapist may help alleviate symptoms. Therapy can help regain access to your problem-solving abilities through stress reduction while teaching you new methods of coping - strengthening your repertoire of coping skills.

Asian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
