As an Asian immigrant, I'm also passionate about supporting 1st- , 1.
Life presents us with many difficulties. When things are unsatisfying or overwhelming, our mind naturally responds with emotional distress that might manifest as anxiety, anger, sadness, helplessness or shame. We often find it hard to navigate these feelings because dealing with the sources can be very intense and complicated, especially when we lack support. I'm here to provide a safe and supportive space where you can explore and express yourself freely. Together, we can navigate your difficult experiences, process any unresolved issues, and work toward a better relationship with yourself.

As a South Asian immigrant in the US, I have experienced losses on many levels.
You came into this world feeling whole. Then life happened and you lost that feeling. It's so close, that feeling, you can almost sense it. You long to feel it again. If this is you, then you have come to the right place. Whether you are a person or a relationship, I believe you have the capacity to recover that potential you sense within you. I am here to create a safe space for you to play and uncover your wholeness. Sometimes safety comes from taking that risk you have been avoiding, but doing so with support. I will walk with you as you go into that dark cave and retrieve the jewel of your brilliance that lies glittering within.

Founder of TriHealing Counseling Group. Like many "first-generationers", I experienced struggles with cultural and generational differences, the over-critical parent(s), the "never good enough" mentality, and a sense of emotional distance within myself and at times, within my relationship with my family. Through my own journey, I learned to challenge cultural norms, embracing my biculturalism and making decisions on how I wanted to experience the world as an independent Vietnamese-American woman. I often travel between San Jose and Chicago so I provide a hybrid of in-person and virtual therapy sessions.

Please note: I can ONLY take NV insurance. I became a therapist because I believe that there is healing and growth that comes from giving other's space to share your life story. In facilitating this process, I will help you process life's events, uncover your personal truths, and make meaning out of your experiences. I realize that in doing so, you will find new meaning, depth of purpose, and healing. I especially enjoy working with children, adolescents, and young adults, by supporting their development, facilitating their personal autonomy, and helping them navigate life's early years.

Have you been feeling not heard or understood, and isolated or ashamed? You may be wondering, “what’s wrong with me?” I know how painful it is to feel that way because I’ve been there many times, too. And I’ve come out of it with a few nuggets of knowledge and tools each time. For 16 years I’ve been helping people feel more connected to and loved by people around them as well as themselves by sharing knowledge and tools accumulated through my personal and professional journey. Human beings are social animals that need connection with others whom we trust and feel safe with to survive and thrive. That's why isolation is so painful.

Living in today's society can pull you in different directions, making you feel lost, hopeless or overwhelmed. Life's pressures and expectations can leave you feeling like you have little control over your own story. Let's rewrite your narrative together. I offer a safe and judgement-free environment where you can explore your identity, reclaim your agency, and become the author of your unique narrative. I also aim to support you in acknowledging systems of oppression and other sociocultural factors of a presenting concern in order to separate you from the problem and work towards depathologizing you mental health.

You might be feeling as if you're drowning or feeling anxious. Memories haunt you. When those thoughts come, you feel overwhelmed, find yourself with your chest tightening, headaches, and possibly crying. You feel hopeless, exhausted, on edge, overextended, and stressed. You find yourself overthinking. There is no safety in the world. These are affecting your relationships, communication, work, and sleep. You long for connection. I have a strong desire to help individuals and couples who want to work on their trauma, anxiety, or relationships. I work with immigrants, veterans, children, and the LGBTQ community.

Now we, as a community, are moving into a new phase of living. I want to use my training to help my clients find their peace and strength to survive these trying and stressful times. My ideal client is someone who wants to explore their “negative” stories about themselves; explore your anxiety or find clarity of what they want in romantic relationships. I am also available to meet online. As an employee at Process Therapy Institute, I have access to many compassionate and wise therapists to share their wisdom.

You don’t have to suffer alone. Sitting with difficult emotions, pain, and discomfort can be challenging. Allow the parts of you that have been rejected, repressed, hidden, or forgotten to surface. Allow these parts of you to be seen, to be heard, to be held, to be loved.

Hello, my name is Debbie Grace Lugtu. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and have my master's degree in counseling. I graduated in Palo Alto University in 2020 with Counseling Honor Society. I work from a strength-based and narrative therapy approach. In the first sessions, I highly focus on rapport building and listening to your narrative/story. Throughout our work, I use an attachment-based lens to figure out the underlying issue and where issue has stemmed from. I use narrative therapy to re-author your story. Alongside, I teach coping skills such as Mindfulness and CBT.

Asian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
