Ashton has worked in: medical outpatient, youth residential, wilderness therapy, public school, community mental health, and outpatient therapy. She sees beyond the illness-based perspective of mental health, instead she views mental health as a continual process of healing and self leadership. She often uses nature as a way to aid in her work.
