Art therapy utilizes creativity and psychotherapeutic methods to explore and name feelings and events while helping integrate and give meaning to those lived experiences.
Life can be challenging, and the ruptures we experience can leave us physically, mentally, and spiritually disjointed. When fractures occur, your body may hold stress even when your mind does not remember its origin, often leaving a sense of being stuck or dysregulated. Finding words to express these feelings can be difficult, but with the guidance of a therapist, you can expand your understanding and discernment, helping to move you in a new direction.

As a Provisional Art Therapist at Renew Art Therapy & Counseling, I specialize in working with children, teens, and young adults.
At times we may feel unheard, lost, or in need of a return home to self. You may be seeking a calming, stable space to explore self or a grounding source of support for yourself or your child. It can be difficult to seek help, but I am here to remind you of the courage it takes to make this vulnerable step. My name is Callen and I am dedicated to creating a place for your story to be held and seen through a lens of empathy and empowerment. I often define therapy as a process of welcoming home parts of self that have been set aside or forgotten. It is through this process that an integrated and compassionate self can be reborn.

I am a board certified Art Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor with experience in treating a variety of anxiety, depression and trauma diagnoses as well as eating disorders.
Are uncomfortable emotions or limiting beliefs clouding your ability to connect to your internal compass and live a life aligned with what you value? Have you been left reeling from the impacts of the pandemic, world events, or other life stressors? If so, I'm here to help you make sense of it all. I believe change is possible when we couple compassionate curiosity with consistent and appropriate support. We are social creatures by nature and thrive when we feel connected and understood by others. But it can be hard to seek out those connections when we're struggling to understand and be at peace with ourselves.

Therapy can be scary. It takes a lot of courage to seek support. As a therapist, I believe art making provides another language to communicate and process life experiences that are difficult to verbalize. Mark making represents evidence of our existence, and having a witness to your story is a powerful first step.

My intention as a therapist is to help each person find a voice through talk therapy, art, yoga, mindfulness, and meditation.
Losing a loved one can be the most difficult time in your life. Emotions are often surprising in their strength or mildness. Grief often breaks a person completely from the inside out. Grieving is hard work, you can get worn out, and feel battered. It can take a lot longer to work through grief than most people realize. People around you may think it’s helpful for you to not talk or cry or focus on your loss but actually, this is just what people need to do. The goal is to not stay stuck, to move through it—and this is part of the process. Grief doesn’t get better by ignoring it and trying to ‘get over it.’

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
