Our art therapists will partner with you to find safe and meaningful ways to meet your goals and we will adapt our strategies to meet your needs and ability level.
Often, words are not enough to describe or make sense of our experiences, feelings and memories of what life brings us. Distressing and traumatic events can leave us feeling fragmented, isolated, on high alert, panicked, stuck in our trauma memories and nightmares and hopeless about our future. We most often see people of all ages who feel like other forms of therapy have not gotten them to their goals, are looking for a non-verbal way to express themselves and want a better quality of life.

My name is Samantha Masone. I'm a licensed professional counselor who specializes in working with children ages 2-10 and older teens who have a history of trauma. I incorporate play therapy, sand tray, and art-based activities into my sessions with younger clients. I also enjoy working with first responders. No matter the age of the client, I find EMDR a useful modality to include. If you're the parent of a child who is experiencing big behaviors or an individual seeking to regain equilibrium in your life, I would love to discuss the possibility of working together.

Sometimes there are thoughts, memories and moods that are causing us distress. Often, when we try to express these to others, we are left feeling more confused about what we are feeling or misunderstood afterward. Sometimes words fail us and we cannot find the right way to express ourselves and then we find ourselves repeating the same cycles. I have found in my work that when words fail, art can help us bridge that language dead-end. I am a registered Art Therapist; I believe that art is innately human and can provide a safe space to initiate growth and change in individuals.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
