As a therapist, it is my goal to establish a validating and empathetic environment, so that you may feel supported throughout this part of your journey while making you feel seen and heard. My practice encompasses a variety of modalities, including Trauma-Focused Therapy, Somatic Therapy, Psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, etc. Above all, I tailor my approach to each individual's specific needs. I also hold an M.A. in Clinical Art Therapy, which I utilize when necessary. Along with art psychotherapy, additional modalities are integrated such as trauma-informed therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches.
Life can be unpredictable and overwhelming. Whether it be work, school, a recent loss, or family conflict, it can be tough to navigate alone. The use of creative arts, along with talk therapy and other evidence-based techniques, can help provide you or your child with the tools and coping skills to overcome life's obstacles. Sometimes, words are just not enough to describe how we feel, no matter your age. As a trauma-informed Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, I seek to create a safe space for my clients to engage in self expression, explore unresolved conflict, and gain a greater understanding of identity and autonomy.

As I think about my journey as an artist - evolving toward art therapy and the clinical world, honing in on my definitions and applications, while recognizing art’s interventions in my own life - I realize these ideals are why I started a therapeutic private practice many years ago. Any creative process can be healing and the possibilities are infinite when blending the process with deep discussion, clinical based talk therapies, spiritual connection, life coaching and vocational services. I have made it my life's mission in sharing these tools to facilitate personal growth, positive change and reach one’s ultimate potential.

There is relief in being able to sit down and express whatever is on your mind. Together we can make sense of it all, and with awareness comes change. I support clients in cultivating self-understanding, identifying and separating from internalized judgments, and building self-acceptance. Creating art in a safe therapeutic space can further illuminate one’s relationship to self and the world. Art can also connect, ground, and soothe us. Being a human is hard, and I strive to offer a space where people can be their authentic selves and receive and internalize unconditional positive regard.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
