I am passionate about helping adults and adolescents struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, emotional regulation, negative body issues,self-esteem and addiction. Maybe you never feel like you are "in the moment", distracted by constant worry, or no matter how much you try you feel like you aren't good enough. Perhaps past hurts and experiences seem to be barriers to moving forward. With the right insight, tools and support you can move forward, experiencing change and growth.

Did you experience a recent traumatic event, like a frightening car accident or sudden death of a loved one. Were you raised in a chaotic or abusive home. Unresolved trauma can lead to flashbacks, a sense of being disconnected from others, mood swing. Some survivors of trauma feel like they are always waiting for the other shoe to drop or like they always have to have their guard up around others. If you have felt trapped by your past trauma or even beyond repair because of the traumatic life experiences you have endured then I can help. I am passionate about helping people resolve trauma so they can live a life full of meaning.

Do you feel like you are not living to your full potential? Do you feel unhappy? Are you being held back by old patterns that no longer serve you? So many of us feel held down by stress and fear that we forget how to be happy. My desire as a therapist is to provide assistance and encouragement for exploring your personal stories as a way of coping with pain and finding meaning.

In addition to more traditional, in-office talk therapy sessions, I also offer art therapy (using art materials in the session) and outdoor therapy (meeting in a local park or going for a walk).
In times of uncertainty, loss, or just in our day-to-day struggles, it is easy to lose sight of who we are and what we want out of life. We all have the capacity to overcome challenges and make positive changes if we give ourselves the time, space, and support for personal growth. When we view ourselves as worthy, purposeful people, we are better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Hello, my name is Amanda and I believe this career found me. Ever since I was a child all I wanted was to help people, be outside and create art. I know the power of art because it has helped me through many tough times. Art is how I communicate when I don't have the words to share my inner world with others. I know the power of being heard without judgment or unwelcome advice, because I too have experienced the feeling of isolation and frustration from receiving the opposite. I know the power of having a relationship with the natural world, because it has fostered a sense of belonging and spirituality for me.

Another big part of my practice is using Art Therapy to encourage clients to feel comfortable and able to express themselves on many levels.
I thoroughly enjoy helping clients to be authentically themselves within a safe and comfortable space. Each person is unique in their own way, and because of this they may need a unique approach in therapy. I look at the therapeutic relationship as a team, we can collaborate together to work on any issues that may be troublesome. Transparency is an important part of the therapeutic relationship, and I encourage it on both sides in order to create a non-judgmental space.

We are the writers of our own story; therapy just provides an editor to sort out some of the more challenging parts of that story. I believe everyone's life experience is unique and, because of that, you truly know yourself best. All that being said, Hello! I am Alisa (ah-lee-sah), a licensed professional counselor. I received my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Eastern Michigan University, and bachelor's in Psychology with a minor in Communication at Oakland University. During my internship, I spent time at a women's shelter working with survivors of domestic abuse and interpersonal partner violence.

It is all too easy to wake up one morning and feel like we are not the person we once were or even the person we want to be. We put ourselves last for so long, that we forget what it is like to find the joy in our everyday. Somewhere, somehow, we lost ourselves along the way. Do you ever feel like this? We all face challenges that can get in the way of our goals, however, we don't have to let those challenges get the better of us. Asking for help can be a tough step to take. I strive to provide a space that is warm and welcoming to all, where you can be free to explore your inner self and create the future you desire.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
